Invention as Public Service at MIT Inspire, Support, and Scale Student Innovation Convocatoria al Desafío Global MIT March 8, 2011

25,800 companies founded by MIT alumni employ about 3.3 million people and generate annual world revenues of $2 trillion, producing the equivalent of the eleventh-largest economy in the world.* * From the 2009 Kauffman Foundation report, “Entrepreneurial Impact: The Role of MIT”
Imagine if we applied that technical and entrepreneurial talent to today’s urgent humanitarian challenges.

Agriculture , Processing Education , Training Emergency , Disaster Relief Energy , Environment Employment , Entrepreneurship Housing , Transportation Health , Accessibility Mobiles , ICTs Water , Sanitation
Goal 2 Foster student innovation through an annual competition that supports the translation of ideas into innovative, feasible project proposals with the potential for impact.
Lifecycle 1-3 Discovery, Design Students learn about design challenges, teams propose solutions and receive feedback on their ideas. 4-5 Decide, Deploy Judges nominate winners; they are announced at the awards ceremony and have a year to implement their projects.

Goal 3 Involve the worldwide MIT community in activities that support student innovation, deliver results to communities alumni care about, and respond to alumni interests.

  1. MIT is world-renown for its innovation and entrepreneurial strengths.
  2. We took that inspiration as our starting point for the MIT Global Challenge, looking at gaps in market delivery of life-improving technologies and services.
  3. MIT has a well-established system for exiting for-profit ventures in well-established markets
  4. But today, the MIT Public Service Center – and the IDEAS Competition and MIT Global Challenge – are part of a growing ecology of course and programs that foster student involvement in international development efforts.
  5. So we created the MIT Global Challenge with several specific goals in mind…
  6. Problems like… MIT graduate and undergraduate students undertake projects in a range of fields in partnership with communities around the world.
  7. In addition to supporting a nascent ecology at MIT, we want to support student enquiry and action directly.
  8. We do this over the course of two distinct phases to the MIT Global Challenge, built on top of the IDEAS lifecycle, over two years – ideation and implementation.
  9. We’re making more awards available to teams as well, so that teams can get to work more quickly and make fundraising less of a short-term priority. In 2011 we’ll give away up to $150,000; teams will be eligible to win up to $25,000 in implementation awards.
  10. Finally, our third goal is to create an exciting new way for alumni to engage directly with each other, the Institute and current students.
  11. IDEAS teams have worked in 28 countries – nearly 65 percent of them being in three regions: the Himalayas, Africa, and Central and South America. Other data points: 10 year IDEAS track record 64 teams awarded $264,000 since 2002 Leveraged results $3.2 million raised by teams in follow-on funding Lasting impact 3 for-profits, 5 non-profits, 8 technology transfer initiatives (14 others moving forward)
  12. These three regions all have strong alumni and at least some enterprise forum presences. We see a tremendous opportunity to connect the experience and resources of these alumni networks with the passion and talent of today’s students to increase prospects for success.
  13. Example 1 of innovative projects – PerfectSight is in its first year of implementation, working in India to implement field trials of a novel device that brings down the cost of eye diagnosis.
  14. Example 2 of innovative projects – Egg Energy, a 2009 winner, serves 1,500 people in East Africa and employs 6 people, with a steady growth projection for the new year.
  15. Example 3 of innovative projects – Assured Labor is live in Nicaragua and expanding into Mexico. They’ve registered 30,000 users with hundreds of companies hiring. They’ve attracted more than $1m in follow-on investment and employ 14 full-time staff in 4 countries.
  16. We’ve developed the MIT Global Challenge platform as a resource to connect these teams to alumni networks on the ground in these areas – to help teams better understand local needs, conditions, and resources as well as to match the passion and talent of MIT students with the experience and resources of the MIT community worldwide.
  17. We’d like to invite you to join with us – in celebrating the Institute’s 150 years of service to the world by supporting this new and sure to evolve platform for innovation as a public service.
  18. The MIT Global Challenge is launching today with MIT alumni leaders, and will launch in 2011 to the worldwide MIT community MIT150 Celebrating 150 years of service to the world IDEAS Competition experience Awards and implementation support since 2001 Growth of “design for development” ecology at MIT Courses, student groups, labs, competitions
