Asthma kids and adults
1. Asthma- Kids and Adults
Kids diagnosed with asthma need to be extra careful in winter. During winter kids are more exposed to
allergens that can easily trigger asthma. The dry and cold winds accompanied by cold, flu and spores can
easily wreak havoc on kids especially if they are asthmatic. According to a research paper published by
the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 2005, autumn and winter are seasons when people
suffering from asthma should remain on high alert.
Winter is especially tough for kids as they spend most of their time indoors thus they get more exposed
to indoor germs and pollutants. Moreover as they stay away from school they miss their friends and
classmates and this can result in stress and anxiety. The buildup of stress and anxiety in kids can easily
trigger asthma attacks and this usually happens during winter holidays.
Christmas is the time to be most careful. A lot of spores and dust float in the air during this period,
thanks to the Christmas tree, the decorations, scented candles, food and the list goes on. All of these
can easily trigger a reaction and bring about an asthma attack. So be careful, if possible don’t use real
trees; use fake ones only after cleaning them of all the dust. Moreover when you open the decoration
boxes from previous year be careful to clean them thoroughly. A lot of children are allergic to different
types of food so the next time you decide to visit your neighbor make sure that your child doesn’t eat
everything that is on the table.
But kids aren’t the only one at risk; even adults are at risk during winter. A lot of people think that just
because they have never suffered from asthma, it will never affect them. Unfortunately this is not true,
asthma can be acquired at any point in life. The best way to deal with it is to know the symptoms
beforehand and take preventive measures.
2. Common asthma symptoms include coughing and wheezing accompanied by shortness of breath and a
tight chest. Although some of these symptoms are similar to cold and flu but whereas cold and flu
symptoms go away after a few days asthma won’t. So if you are experiencing such symptoms visit a
doctor and get yourself diagnosed. Asthma experienced at later stages of life is known as adult-onset
asthma and is usually caused due to allergies.
