1. What are they and what do they do? Centripetal and centrifugal forces
2. Centripetal force When a roller coaster is moving through the loop on the track this force comes into play. This is the force that causes an object to move in a circle.
3. What is it? A force which pulls an object toward the centre of a circle is called a centripetal force. Centripetal force, is what makes an object move in a circular path. When you swing a stone around on a string, you must pull on the string to keep the stone from flying off in a straight line. The pull the string applied to the object is centripetal force.
4. Take as an example a stock car, when it turns a corner the force that holds it on the track is the inward pull called centripetal force
5. Centrifugal force This is the force that is often used to describe why mud gets spun off a spinning tire, or water gets pushed out of the clothes during the spin dry cycle of your washing machine.
6. What is it? An object travelling in a circle behaves as if it is experiencing an outward force. If the object is heavier, the force will be greater If the object is faster, the force will be greater And if the distance from the centre is greater the force will be greater too.
7. We are all familiar with the effects of centrifugal force we experience it every time we are in a car and take a bend - we feel a force pushing us to the outside of the curve. And if you have placed a cassette tape on the seat next to you when taking a sharp bend at speed, it slides across the seat.
