Most business aspects are getting automated today. Software companies are
gearing up for automation for handling mundane tasks in a bid to increase their profit
margin and reduce the number of employees on their payroll. Even banks have started
automation with ICICI bank introducing software robots (The first Indian bank to do
so). Over 200 software robots now perform 10 lakh transactions per day. However,
one field where it will be a challenge to introduce automation in sales
negotiations. The sales sector has seen its share of automation. Sales force
automation is a technique of using software to automate the different processes of
sales like order processing, contact management inventory controlling and monitoring
but somehow the part where you pitch your client and get new business for the
company will remain human for long. Replacing a human sales person with an
artificial one is difficult.
Existential worries aside, a skilled salesperson is much in demand these days. So
if you are just starting out on a new sales job or doing the job for a couple of years
and scratching your head about how you can improve your sales figures, the following
tips will enable you to up your game and improve your sales skills.

Customers Come First
Being good at sales doesn’t always mean getting your product sold. Building trust,
networking with people, understanding the customer’s needs attain top priority in a
sales job. Most sales persons singularly focus on getting the highest number of
products sold and earning their incentives. But that will only work for a short duration.
In the wrong run, customers will call your bluff and your game will be over. So work
on building trust and understanding customer needs.
Know your product and believe in them
To solve customer queries and explain the various features of the product or
service you are selling, it is imperative to get very well acquainted with them. You
should know every aspect of the product and believe that your product and services
are the best and will satisfy customer needs.
Don’t be pushy
As said by Mark Stevens (CEO, MSCO),”great salespeople never look like
selling anything. They are educating, instilling faith and confidence.” It is your job to
make the potential customer know about the products you are selling and its various
features. It is their decision whether they want to buy it or not. Pushing and
pressurizing them to buy the product can be counterproductive in the long run.

Be a good listener
Being a good salesperson doesn’t mean you will always go on blabbing and not
give the customer a moment to voice an opinion. You have to listen to a customer’s
point before you start your sales pitch. Remember that great salesperson sell solutions
to problems which can only be done after listening and understanding the customer's
needs.
Be resilient
Being a great salesperson is synonymous with being resilient. Rejections are just
part of the job profile and one shouldn’t take it to heart. Top sales persons have a
unique ability to cope with difficult situations and optimize performance in the face of
adversity.
So in order to improve and become a better salesperson, it is essential to
understand that customers are the top priority, be confident about what you are trying
to sell, not to be pushy, be a good listener and always be resilient and never take
initial rejections and failures to heart.
