6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Similarities:
•Both magazines have devoted each page to either images
or text.
•The text is placed in columns and questions are in a
different colour.
•A main quote is taken from the interview.
•Both magazines have placed the text on the left and
images are on the right because people tend to read from
left to right.
•Drop capital at the start of the article is conventional and
the first words is in capital to draw in readers
Differences:
•I used a male artist whereas they used a female
artist. Male artists are more appealing.
•I used a different colour layout in order to suit my
genre and my artist style.
•My background is dark and you can see an outline
of a building.
•I have used a two columns house style.

7. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
•Contemporary R&B (also known as simply R&B) is a music genre that
combines elements of hip hop, soul, R&B and funk.
•The stereo typical social group for the genre is working class afro Caribbean
males, between the ages 16‐25
•In both representations the artist is wearing a big puffy jacket and a hat
over their heads. This really shows the genre off.
•However, I have chosen to challenge this particular social group, as it is
expanding on new cultures and ethnicities. My magazine is able to represent a
variety of social groups instead of just one.
•I have used an Asian male for my magazine whereas normally on R&B themed
magazines you would see afro Caribbean males.
•I have used dark backgrounds to express the genre as it is associated with being
sexy and mysterious.
•Although my magazine cover and article is of a male artist, My magazine is not
gender biased as there is a mixture of female and male artists in my magazine.
•My artist has attitude and confidence and this is portrayed in the image.

8. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
• IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching
almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men – almost 26 million UK
adults – while our websites collectively reach over 20 million users every month
• IPC's diverse print and digital portfolio offers something for everyone, with a
focus on three core audiences: men, mass market women and upmarket
women.
• They distribute leading music magazine NME and therefore have knowledge
and experience within the music genre.
• This concludes, that publishing my magazine will be a good opportunity for the
company to expand their audience and genre of music.

13. How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted my audience by using dark colours such as red
and navy that are quite bold and will stand out and go
well with the colour white as my audience preferred
darker colours. This information was obtained from my
questionnaire. I used red for the masthead because it
stood out against the dark background, therefore it
would grab the target audiences attention. I used white
for the cover lines on the front cover as it also stands out
on top of the dark background.
The price of the magazine would also attract the
audience because from my questionnaire I noticed a
majority of people were willing to pay £1‐£2 for a music
magazine so I have priced my music magazine at £1.50.
I chose interesting cover lines to put on the front cover
so that when the audience was drawn in by the bold
colours of the front cover they will buy the magazine as
the cover lines will appeal to them.

14. How did you attract/address your audience?
The Contents page will attract the target audience
because the images I have used show a variety of gender
and ethnicities. The images are close ups to medium
close ups and this is appealing to the target audience as
it creates a sense of intimacy and makes the audience
feel close to the artists.
The colour scheme is still red, navy and white so that it
looks professional and that would entice the audience.
My contents page addresses the reader through regular
and feature articles. It makes it easier for the target
audience to find the pages they want to read and also
gives an insight into what is in the magazine.
Milling Tang
15. How did you attract/address your audience?
The double spread article will attract the target
audience through the use of light colours on a
dark background. I did the questions in white
and the answers in red to follow the colour
scheme of the magazine and this grabs the
attention of the audience. I also used the red
for headlines and for the artists name as it
stood out. I also used a drop capital as it stood
out most from the image and as it is in white it
will grab their attention to the interview. The
colours need to stand out as the image is very
dark.
Also, the image I have used looks professional
as it consists of a MCU shot of my artist and
effects have been added to it. The darkness
gives it a more original look, which engages the
audiences attention. It is very appealing as it
only focuses on the artists and the rest of the
background has been edited darker and faded
out to give it a mysterious look and also creates
emotion.
In the interview I asked questions that are
appealing to the target audience as it includes
insight into their life and their music.

17. What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
I used a camera to take my images for my
magazine. I use a variety of different shots and
positions.
•I used blogger to log and keep track of all my
coursework.
•I update my blog every time I complete a piece of
research/work.
•My blog enabled me to see the progress I was
making throughout my work.
Milling Tang
18. What have you learnt about
technologies from the process
of constructing this product?
I used Adobe Photoshop to create the front
cover of my music magazine.
Also, I used the tools in Photoshop to
manipulate my images. They were easy to use
and enabled me to make my images and front
cover to look professional. For example, I used
the gradient tool to make my double page
spread more darker and used it to fade and
soften the bits of the image I want and there
was a focus tool with I used around the artists
face and it made everything around the face
faded and this made it look more appealing .
Without Photoshop I think my magazine
would not have been as effective in
persuading and attracting the target audience
to buy it.

19. What have you learnt about
technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
I used In‐Design to create my contents and
double spread page and give it a professional
look.
Using In‐Design I added effects to my images.
Firstly I re‐adjusted the dominant image and
the other 3 images, by creating a Polaroid
effect which I found effective and
professional.
This is to make my magazine appear more
creative and exciting, to attract my target
audience as that’s what they would expect to
find.

21. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
The title I used on the preliminary task was situated
at the top left corner of the cover, whereas the title
of my main task is situated in the middle taking the
width of the cover and had effects like drop shadow
done to it.
The main images I used both followed the
conventions as they both take up the majority of the
page and both have the attitude of the genre of the
magazine. The quality of the photographs have much
difference to each other as the photo for my main
photo for my main task looks more professional as it
has been edited with effects.
The arrangement of the cover lines I used in my
preliminary task were all over the page whereas in
my main task the cover lines are more organised and
stick to the outer sides of the magazine. From
learning the conventions of professional magazines I
used the cover lines to frame my main image and
not to crowd the page in my main task. Also, my
cover lines stand out more as I have added drop
shadows whereas in my preliminary task I did not
have that.
The colour scheme of my preliminary task was yellow, purple and white did not make the
magazine easy to read as they were all pretty light colours and this meant that the text did not
stand out on top of each other. I amended these mistakes in my main task by using a darker
background with red and white as the text stood out more.
Milling Tang
22. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
Using In‐Design for the first time really challenged my creativity in the preliminary
task but as I used it more and more my skills have developed, I could create a more
professional look on my final product.
In my main task, my pictures are more engaging and look more professional with
the Polaroid effect. Also, to give it a more realistic and effective look images have
been placed at a slant.
I have made my contents more professional as it gives a brief outline of what is on
that page. Also, pages are categorised.
I also used dividers to sections the page.
Milling Tang
23. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
Using In‐design, I produced my double page spread. In‐design allowed me to
create many effects such as drop capitals and putting drop shadow on my text.
These effects made the text stand out more. I also learned how to position my
text. The way I used colours makes the page look professional and looking back at
my preliminary task, this page looks very professional as the image and texts are
proportioned professionally.
