Chronic Illnesses Outpace Infections As Big Killers Worldwide
by JASON BEAUBIEN September 04, 2013
People around the world are getting healthier and living longer.
Infectious diseases are declining around the globe. But at the same
time, chronic health problems are on the rise, particularly in developing
nations.
"The leading causes of death and disability have changed from
communicable diseases in children to non communicable diseases in
adults. Eating too much has overtaken hunger as a leading risk factor for
illness," the report states.
Tim Evans, a health and nutrition specialist at the World Bank says:
"Twenty or 30 years ago, we were dealing with diseases that were
killers — childhood killers, infectious killers.
Now we are dealing increasingly with diseases that are not primarily
killing but causing chronic illness — heart disease, injuries, mental
health.
“And these issues are increasing in virtually all parts of the world, even
in low- and middle-income countries.
3. Chronic illnesses are non
communicable illnesses
that are prolonged in
duration, do not resolve
spontaneously, and are
rarely cured completely.
Chronic diseases are
Leading cause of death and
disability in the US
7 out of 10 deaths among
American each year from
chronic diseases
4. According to CENTERS FOR DISEASE
CONTROL AND PREVENTION
-About one fourth of people with
chronic conditions have one or
more daily activity limitation.
-They affect people of all ages and
are now recognized as a leading
health concern of the nation.
About 133 million Americans—
nearly 1 in 2 adults—live with at
least one chronic illness.
More than 75% of health care costs
are due to chronic conditions.
5. Key Chronic Diseases:
Heart disease and stroke are the
first and third leading causes of
death, accounting for more than
30% of all U.S. deaths each year.
Cancer, the second leading
cause of death, claims more than
half a million lives each year.
Diabetes is the leading cause of
kidney failure, non traumatic
lower extremity amputations,
and new cases of blindness each
year among U.S. adults aged 20–
74 years.
6. Arthritis, the most common
cause of disability, limits
activity for 19 million U.S.
adults.
Obesity has become a major
health concern for people of
all ages. 1 in every 3 adults
and nearly 1 in every 5 young
people aged 6–19 are obese.
7. Common health-damaging, but
modifiable risk behaviors—
-tobacco use
-insufficient physical activity
- poor eating habits
-excessive alcohol use
-Stress
-environmental factors
They all are responsible for many
of the illness, disability, and
premature deaths.
Although Chronic diseases are the
most common and costly of all
health problems, but Chronic
