The success of your team goal and team work depends in good part on
cooperation from the people on your team and people across the larger
organization.
So what do you do when you can’t get cooperation, when people resist?

Let’s be very clear: the best way to deal with resistance is to
prevent it, which means planning in advance (refer to the earlier
videos and content). Not all resistance can be prevented.

Description:
Immediate agreement: no reservations, concerns, or questions.
Or the person treats you like a savior.

 Avoidance
Description:
Lip service to your request, but no follow-up or action. Claim that
the problem is already solved or can’t be. Silence or one-word

 Flooding
Description:
Overwhelming detail, much of it irrelevant to the issue.
You can’t make sense of it all.

 Intellectualizing
Description:
Theoretical discussions when you need action.

 Attacking
Description:
Questions about your competence, qualifications, experience, etc.
Sometimes: confrontation, anger, finger pointing, competing, etc.

 Refusal
Description:
The stakeholder may
refuse point-blank to
work with you.

Why Might People Not Cooperate With Your
Team Work or Team Goal?
People may be uncooperative or resistant for a
variety of reasons. Some of these reasons might
seem understandable to you, while others may
strike you as unsupportive or even petty.
We recommend that you refrain from making value
judgments about the reasons. Instead you should
try and discern the possible underlying causes for
resistance and deal with it as best you can.
