This is a presentation for members of the Reed Elsevier Connected Employee Community to learn more about friending, activity streams and content subscriptions, and how to manage them.
3. Friends’ Activity Stream Of the three streams, your Friends’ activities should attract the greatest interest from you, followed by conversations and then site activities. Friends’ activities are separated into dated entries. Links to their created content and content sources are shown.
4. RSS Your Friends’ Activities To reflect the importance of the Friends stream, there is an RSS symbol at the top right corner of the stream. This allows you to subscribe to the stream so you can access it while not having to be on the Connected site. An RSS feed provides you with mirrored content from another web page or web site. You can subscribe to external feeds or feeds within the community, such as forums, posts, as well as content from public profiles of community friends. Whenever you see the icon on one of your community pages, you can click on it to become an RSS subscriber. See How to use RSS in Internet Explorer.
5. Your Favorites At the lower left corner of your Connected home page, you will find the list of forum posts, blog topics and media uploads you have added as favorites. You can choose to favorite either a forum, a blog, a wiki or a media gallery, or individual posted content from each. The View more link brings up all your favorites.
6. Your Friends Your friends are listed on the right sidebar below the main links menu. They are shown with their avatars and a link to their profile pages for fast access. When you send a friendship request or receive a friendship request, the user is added to your friendship list, and you are added to the user's friendship list. 7. Your Groups Below the Your Friends widget is the Your Groups widget on the right sidebar. The links take you to the groups to which you have subscribed. The View All Groups link will show you all the community groups from the Groups page.
21. Conversations Start conversations by clicking on a friend’s Start a Conversation link beneath their avatar. You get to use the full WYSIWYG editor. Click the Conversations link to the right of your Name link to view all conversations with friends. Restricting Conversation Access.
22. Comments You can leave comments to a friend’s personal page. To leave a comment click on a friend’s Add a Comment link beneath their avatar. You get to use the full WYSIWYG editor. Comments are listed under the My Comments header at the bottom right-center of the page. The comments stream is RSS enabled.
23. Announcements Below your avatar is an Add an Announcement link. This allows you to publish an announcement using the full WYSIWYG editor. The dated announcement appears immediately below the Bio field. Announcements are also RSS enabled.
24. My Activity The My Activity stream is a date-stamped and linked listing of all your activities on Connected. It appears below your announcements. Whether it is content created in groups, blogs, forums, wikis, media galleries or on the pages of your friends, a brief summary is listed with links to the mentioned content and sources. Your My Activity stream is also RSS enabled.
25. My Files Below your My Groups is your My Files. These are files of any format that you wish to upload for blog topics or any other page content you post on Connected. You upload files as you would documents or media to the media galleries. You are able to create folders to categorize your content items.
26. Shared Favorites and Feeds Beneath your avatar and links on the left is the Shared Favorites (as on the home page) and Shared Feeds. These are a great way of sharing useful knowledge and content with visitors to your personal page. Enabling the Shared Favorites List Subscribing to an RSS Feed
