3. TASK
Your task will be to learn as much as you
can about new and different types of
poems and poets. You will then create
your own poetry, both original and
inspired, to publish in a class book.
Included in the book will be poetry written
by you and your classmates as a sort of
memoir of your eighth grade year.
4. Process – Steps One & Two
Learning About Poems
1. With a partner, look up the twenty (20) poetic terms found
on this worksheet using Dictionary.com.
• With your partner, research all of the types of poetry listed
below. Take notes about each of the BOLD FACE
poems in your writing folder. Include an example of each
(for a ballad, include only the first two stanzas). Be sure
to add the name of the poem and the poet too!
Types to research:
ballad haiku tanka nonet
clerihew Kyrielle septolet sonnet
cinquain limerick concrete acrostic

5. Process – Step 3
• Learning About Poets – Research two (2) famous
poets and read some of their poems. Take notes
about the poets, including a list of some of their
poems. Do not choose the first two poets you come
to, but take time to get to know some of them, read
their poems, and enjoy! Take what you know about
poetry, choose one poem by each poet you
researched, analyze those poems, and then write
your own poems that are somehow inspired by the
poets’ works.

6. Process – Step Four
• Writing Poems – Using your notes, write
an original poem for each of the formats
we have discussed in class. There will be
20 all together. Be sure to give your
poems titles and keep them in the proper
format for the type of poem you are
writing. Write these poems in your
journals as rough drafts. You will have
the opportunity to work with classmates to
edit and revise these poems until you are
happy with your product. Keep track on
the attached chart.

7. Process –Step 5
1. Collect your refined poems and type them
in word documents. Be sure to save them
to your O-Drive! We will publish the
finished poems in our very own books.
Class poetry books will also include a
poem written by each of your classmates
and your teacher! We will all work together
on this to create a lasting memory.
