Spot zero reverse osmosis system - Leading sea water RO system, Coast effective and ease of maintenance. Spot Zero RO System for marine yachts and sail boats.
2. What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse osmosis is a water purification process in which water is forced through a semi-
permeable membrane that removes 90-99% of tap water impurities. The result is water that
is free of minerals and other contaminants.
Membrane type determines the amount of dissolved solids a unit is capable of removing.
For example, Cellulose Tri-Acetate (CTA) membranes have a removal rate of 88-94%, Thin
Film Composite (TFC) membranes remove between 94-98% of dissolved solids, and Hi-S
Membranes have higher removal rates, between 97.5-99%, and are especially adept at
removing silicates
Every ship is installed with fresh water production unit which produces fresh water from sea
water. The efficient water production unit of the ship helps the vessel owner to save on
additional fresh water expenses that are incurred by purchasing water from port suppliers.
3. Reverse osmosis process.
Reverse osmosis is one of the modern methods used by the shipping industry to produce
fresh water from sea water. This method of water production does not use waste heat
source, unlike fresh water generator, to desalinate the sea water to convert it into fresh
water with low salt ppm.
4. Principle of Reverse Osmosis
When a chemical solution is separated from pure water by a semi permeable membrane
(allowing passage of water not salt) then the pure water flows through the membrane until
all the pure water has passed through or until the hydrostatic pressure head of the salt
solution is sufficiently big enough to arrest or stop the process.
Reverse osmosis is the use of this phenomenon in reverse direction. This results in water
being forced through the membrane from the concentrated solution toward the more dilute
one. This is achieved by applying pressure of the osmotic pressure of the concentrated
solution.
5. Working
The osmotic pressure of sea water is 28 bars but to overcome system losses and the fact that
the sea water concentration increases as it passes through the length of the membrane, much
higher pressure around 40-70 bar, depending upon the plant size, is required.
Pump is popularly used to produce high pressure across the membrane. The membrane used
has a very fine barrier of dense holes which only allows water and gases to pass through,
while preventing the passage of solutes such as salt and other impurities.
The fresh water produced after this stage is treated with chemicals and ultraviolet treatment
to make it drinkable and useful for other purpose.
6. Today this technology has earned its rightful status as the most convenient and thorough
method to produce contaminant free clean water. It is used by many water and soda
bottling plants and by many industries that require ultra-refined water in manufacturing.
Reverse osmosis has also made its way into the residential sector and has become a popular
under-the-counter water filtration system for many families.
Spot Zero was conceived in 2006 to solve a demand for spot free water once and for all.
Traditionally yachts would have the option of using a mobile water softener which will
reduce or remove calcium and magnesium from the shore side water and replace those ions
with sodium. By design, softeners will not remove or reduce the number of Total Dissolved
Solids or (TDS) from the water which is why they cannot be considered a true spot free
rinse. At the end of the day, TDS is what a water spot is made up of and so therefore to have
a true spot free you must reduce or remove the TDS from the water. There are a couple of
different ways to remove TDS from water, reverse osmosis, distillation, and deionization. We
chose to use reverse osmosis because of it's cost effectiveness and ease of maintenance.
The end result is a word of mouth phenomenon quickly spreading through the aftermarket
and now into the standard specs of boat builders around the world.
