     Good Packaging…
         …HAS IMPROVED PEOPLE’s LIFES…
         Packaging as we know it today has a rather short history. It is only in the
         past 100 years that we started to use prepackaged goods on larger scale.


                  World hunger is a huge problem, and it mostly occurs in areas of the
                  world where packaging is less developed.

                  Packaging can solve some problems but it also generates new
                  problems.

                  Creating packaging wastes and destroys valuable resources,
                  energy and material.

                  Packaging pollutes the world.

     What is a Spackaging?
         DEFINITION

         Is safe and healthy for individuals and communities throughout its life cycle.

         Meets market criteria for performance and cost.

         Use renewable energy (transport, manufacture)

         Optimize the use of renewable or recycled source materials.

         Is manufactured using clean production technologies and best practices.

         Is made from materials healthy in all probable end-of-life scenarios.

         Is physically designed to optimize materials and energy

         Is effectively recovered and utilized in biological and/or industrial closed loop

         cycles.

         - Devise the best format to deliver your message, with the least amount of resources, by asking:

         • Is the design appropriate for the final
         product?

         • Is there a better way to design this using
         fewer materials?

         • Can we use recycled materials?

         • What is required to produce this design?

         • How much energy will it eat? Pollution?
          Hazardous waste?

         • Is the product reusable?

         • If it isn’t reusable is it recyclable?

         • Is it easy to recycle?

     Certifications and Environmental Labeling
     Once you become familiar with the most common eco-labels and certifications,
     it is easy to investigate which systems most closely fit the criteria that you and
     your client are targeting.


                   ISO is a non-governmental organization made up of a network of the national standards
                   institutes of 157 countries, which all participates in the development of international
                   market-driven standards for industry.

                   ISO 9001 and 14001 are quality and environmental management standards that a company
                   may choose to adopt.

                               ISOO 9001 means that the organization in question has committed to enhance
                               customer satisfaction by meeting customer and applicable regulatory
                               requirements.

                               ISO 14001 is a family of certifications that mean that the organization or
                               company is committed to minimizing the harmful effects on the environment
                               caused by its activities and continually improving its environmental performance.

     Certifications and Environmental Labeling
            Chlorine Free Products Association (CFPA) is a certification program for companies that
            produce chlorine free products. A product bearing the Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) or Processed
            Chlorine Free (PCF) emblem is subject to ongoing testing, inspection, and enforcement.

            Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) seal is reserved for paper that includes recycled fibers that
            meet Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for recycled or postconsumer content and
            have not been rebleached with chlorine containing compounds. Minimum of 30 percent
            postconsumers content is required.




            EMAS, the European Union Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a management
            tool for companies and other organizations to evaluate, report, and improve their environmental

     Certifications and Environmental Labeling
            Green e logo identifies products made by companies that purchase certified renewable energy
            to offset a portion or all of their electricity use. Renewable energy types include but are not
            limited to win power, solar power, low impact hydropower, and biomass.

            Green Seal is and independent nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding the
            enviorement and transforming the marketplace by promoting manufacture, purchashe, adn use
            of environmentally responsible products and services. www.greenseal.org




            FSC, Forest Steward Council, is a nonprofit international organization which promotes the
            responsible forest management. www.fsc.org

     - The 360 Paper Bottle is a sustainable vision of the future.
            - Totally recyclable paper container made from 100% renewable resources.
            - Made from food-safe and fully recyclable materials.
            - Decreases energy consumed throughout the product life cycle without sacrificing functionality.
            -  It is paper packaging that stands up to all liquid categories.

     - Popular science suggests that it takes a plastic water bottle 450 to 1000 years to completely biodegrade.
     - Product design student of came up with the redesigned plastic bottles
     - Redesign the way they package and transport their products in order to reduce the carbon footprint.

     -  Design student designed this packaging concept for halogen light bulbs.
     -  It is made from one piece of recycled paper
     -  without glue or printed ink since the design is created with an embossed points.

            - Durable porcelain (eliminate de the need for frequent repairs and replacements)

     Conclusion
   - Think design includes sustainability.

   -  Packaging can solve some problems but it also generates new problems.

   -  Cradle to Cradle promotes a new way to design systems to reduce this problems.

   - Consider the natural capital as a high value and cost of the natural resources.

   - To use a propose of metrics to evaluate previously the sustainability of our

   products.

   -  Sustainability production it will not be easy but it is a necessity.

It is only in the past 100 years that we started to use prepackaged goods on larger scale. World hunger is a huge problem, and it mostly occurs in areas of the world where packaging is less developed. Packaging can solve some problems but it also generates new problems. Is made from materials healthy in all probable end-of-life scenarios. SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING Certifications and Environmental Labeling Once you become familiar with the most common eco-labels and certifications, it is easy to investigate which systems most closely fit the criteria that you and your client are targeting. ISO is a non-governmental organization made up of a network of the national standards institutes of 157 countries, which all participates in the development of international market-driven standards for industry. ISO 9001 and 14001 are quality and environmental management standards that a company may choose to adopt. ISOO 9001 means that the organization in question has committed to enhance customer satisfaction by meeting customer and applicable regulatory requirements.   • 36. SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING Certifications and Environmental Labeling Chlorine Free Products Association (CFPA) is a certification program for companies that produce chlorine free products. A product bearing the Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) or Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) emblem is subject to ongoing testing, inspection, and enforcement. www.chlorinefreeproducts.org Processed Chlorine Free (PCF) seal is reserved for paper that includes recycled fibers that meet Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for recycled or postconsumer content and have not been rebleached with chlorine containing compounds. Minimum of 30 percent postconsumers content is required.
