Fires are scary and very dangerous! They are loud and hot. Smoke from a fire can make it very hard to see. Fires will hurt and destroy things in your home.
Help make your home safer from fire. Do you know where possible fire problems exist in your home? What can you do to make sure that you and your family are less likely to be harmed by fire?
Around the House Tip # 1 Never put anything over a lamp. Examples: clothes, blankets, sheets, etc.
Around the House Tip # 2 Don’t stand too close to a fireplace, woodstove or kerosene heater. You could get burned or your clothes could catch fire.
Around the House Tip # 3 Never touch matches, lighters or candles. If you see these items in a room, tell an adult right away.
Around the House Tip # 4 Don’t cook alone or without asking an adult. Have an adult turn all pot handles toward the center of the stove. If handles are hanging over the side, someone could bump into them and knock them off of the stove.
Around the House Tip # 5 Don’t play with electrical cords. Never stick anything into an electrical cord. Turn off lights, stereos, TVs and other electrical equipment when you are finished using them.
Smoke Alarms Can Help! Would you know if your home was on fire? What would happen if you were sleeping? You may not see fire, smell smoke or wake up in time to get out safely. Smoke alarms can save your life!!!
What is a smoke alarm? Smoke alarms are tools that can tell if there is smoke in the air. They work even if you can’t smell smoke. A smoke alarm looks like a small dish on the ceiling of your home.
What do smoke alarms sound like? A smoke alarm makes a very loud beeping sound to warn you that a fire has started. When you hear the sound, follow your home escape plan to get out safely.
Remind your parents to: Put smoke alarms in your home, especially near bedrooms. Test smoke alarms monthly to make sure they are working, and so you’ll know what it sounds like when it goes off. Replace old batteries with brand new ones at least once a year.
Escape From a Fire What would you do if there was a fire in your home? It’s important to get out fast!! Never hide or take time to gather up your belongings.
Escape From a Fire Fires can be very loud, burn very fast and their smoke makes it almost impossible to see. It helps to have a plan so you’ll know what to do to get out of your house.
Escape Plan Good escape plans help you get out of your house quickly and safely. It’s important that you and your parents draw a map of your emergency exit and study it so you will know where to go incase of a fire.
Escape Plan Tip # 1 Try to find two ways out from every room in your home. The first way out should be the door. Every way needs to be planned and practiced with a grown-up.
Escape Plan Tip # 2 Before opening any door, feel the door first at the bottom and then work your hand up the door to see if it is hot. A hot door means that there may be a fire on the other side so you should try to get out another way. Tip # 3 Stay low to the floor when escaping a fire. Smoke will travel up high.
Escape Plan Tip # 4 Pick a safe and easy-to-remember place outside your home tom meet your family after you get out. Tip # 5 After you get out, call 9-1-1 or the fire department, Stay outside no matter what. Don’t go back for anything!
