Konduit is a visual programming tool that allows creation of personal work flows using semantic data from the desktop or from the web. It is very flexible and powerful regarding the possible uses. The created work flows can process the data in any required way, they can create new data, search existing one, integrate different datasets or access desktop application functionality. It can be used for backup, filtering or cleaning of the data. Providing a user-friendly and easy to use interface for such a powerful tool is essential, therefore we chose the visual drag-and-drop interface, with components that can easily be connected. However, using the application still requires some basic knowledge of semantics.
IVEAKnowledge articulation and visualization: Visual exploration of text collection: Exploring different facets of a complex information space to gain insights is a common yet challenging task for many scientists and analysts alike. As a substantial amount of valuable information to be explored is stored in unstructured or weakly structured text documents, there is a need to support users in their analytical activity. In this context, we proposed an approach to enable users to explore a text collection in a personalized manner, by using the formal representation of entities of interest to users to drive the exploration process. This approach has been initially realized in a prototype, called IVEA (http://smile.deri.ie/projects/ivea), which is designed based on Shneiderman's visual information-seeking mantra "Overview first, zoom and filter, then details-on-demand". It employs multiple coordinated views to guide users through this workflow. The core element in IVEA is a simple user-defined ontology encapsulating their sphere of interest. Various statistics about the correspondence between documents in a collection and entities in the ontology are visually presented to facilitate the analytic process.
