The Energy Challenge and the Cities

● Cities today are of the earth surface

● Cities will grow from 50% to of world population by 2050

● Cities are of global CO2 emissions

● of city growth will be in new economies

the battle will be won, or lost, in the cities
                                                                         3

What do we mean by Net-Zero?

● “A Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) is a building with greatly reduced
operational energy needs. In such a building, sufficient efficiency gains will
have been made such that the remaining portion of the building’s energy needs
could be offset by renewable technologies. An NZEB should have no adverse
energy or environmental impacts associated with its operation . In other
words, an NZEB should be highly energy efficient and capable of
producing at least as much energy over the course of a year as it draws
 from the utility grid.”
Paul Torcellini, PhD, PE, and Shanti Pless, LEED AP,

● Across all NZEB definitions and classifications, one design rule remains
constant: reduce energy demand to the lowest possible level first, then
  address energy supply.

You can’t manage performance if you don’t
measure (actual) usage (and compare to stds
 and design goals)

Measured evaluation is based on real life and takes into account implementation
shortcomings such as
             •Incorrect settings
             •actual operation of the building
•actual behaviour and number of occupants
•Indicators are evaluated by measurements or by calculations based on
             measurements
                                                                                     18

                             • Only 5 uses = HVAC + Light + Hot Water

  1. World Standards Day – Standards Council of Canada – Paving the path to high performance Green Buildings   Slide 1 I am honored to be here today, in front of this special group of people who are committed to creating a better future every day.   How do I know that you are special?  In part, because you are here – committing to deal with very big challenges and opportunities with solutions like “green buildings”, smart grid, and sustainable cities and towns. And because you do the hard work to continually raise the level of “BAU” business as usual – by raising the standards that drive the buildings industry. This is important work.   My objective today is to provide a glimpse of what’s possible – what’s already happening today as I’ve experienced it in my company, Schneider Electric – in our work with customers, and also in our own buildings. Incredible positive energy and net zero carbon projects are being successfully delivered in an economically viable way today – here and there. They are not even close to mainstream – ………. Yet.. As you must understand from John Knubley’s opening remarks, we have much work to do, all over the world and while all of the answers are not clear, it is clear that innovation is required, and then finding a way to drive the best ideas, processes, practices into standard practice – via Standards – is absolutely CRUCIAL. This is what I mean by “ paving the path”. Pioneers make their own path, fast followers make their way through the bumps, and mud. However, the vast majority of people, the industry players that build, retrofit, and maintain the places where we live, work and play – they don’t like bumps and mud, and new paths. They can’t afford to get stuck in the mud. They need standard, repeatable, economically viable practices that scale.
  2. So if it’s so hard, why bother? Why are energy efficient, High Performance buildings important anyway? Today we face significant challenges that provide the impetus, the compelling reason to change.  We have already heard some of this today… and I can spend much less time on this topic. We have an energy dilemma. Our planet faces an unprecedented energy challenge, with global energy demand growing faster than current production capacity, resulting in diminishing supplies and increasing prices. By 2050, energy demand will double in order to keep pace with demographic, economic, and industrial growth throughout the world. Within this same timeline, we must cut in half the amount of carbon gas emissions compared to 1990 levels to avoid the dramatic consequences of climate change that will affect every citizen, business, and country. As energy consumption continues to rise, it is imperative that we find a way to live with less reliance on fossil fuels, if we wish to protect the planet’s climate and preserve the fuels for future generations. According to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, buildings account for up to 40% of energy use in most countries .7 With global energy demand outgrowing current production, there is a compelling reason to act with force. ENERGY Efficiency is something we can all focus on NOW, and frankly, it pays for itself if done well.

Located in Meudon, France, just outside of Paris, it is the world’s largest positive energy building, producing more energy than it consumes. Schneider Electric collaborated extensively with key project stakeholders throughout the integrative design/build process. The building was designed to reduce energy consumption, guarantee user comfort and produce enough energy to surpass consumption. High performance insulation, natural ventilation, an intelligent Building Management System, a biomas CHP (combined heat and power) boiler, and photovoltaic energy, all contribute to the positive energy achievement. Schneider Electric supplied a solution based on EcoStruxure architecture, integrating building and energy management, power management and security management. EcoStruxure acts as a solution ecosystem, delivering guaranteed compatibility across key application areas and leveraging open standards—including Ethernet, TCP/IP, BACnet®, LON®, and Modbus®—across both Schneider Electric and third-party offers. EcoStruxure Solution intelligent Building Management System (iBMS) • electrical distribution equipment (MV/LV boards, transformers) • structured cabling network • heating & ventilation control • lighting control • sunblind control • motorized window control • security (intrusion detection, access control, video surveillance) • alarm management • space management Personal comfort control In order to optimize the comfort and user-friendliness of the building, work areas were divided into 2.70 m sections, with the following in each: • 2 dimmable light fixtures • 2 motorized blinds • 2 motorized windows • 1 controllable ceiling fan • 1 occupancy and luminosity sensor A single device, the STIBIL® room controller, manages this equipment in each area. Individual occupants can control their own environment by accessing a “personal comfort” control panel via their PC or a remote control device.
  6. http://www.schneider-electric.com/solutions/ww/en/ref/4871579-energy-management-upgrades-help-this-environmental-showcase-qualify-for-leed-platinum-certification?segment=4872793 The Earth Rangers Centre is an advanced green building, certified Gold under LEED® for New Construction and LEED Platinum for Existing Buildings. Through school shows, community events, and online programs, Earth Rangers makes children aware of the impact that humans have on the environment, inspiring them with a lasting passion to build a green future. Located on the Kortright Living City Campus in Woodbridge Ontario, Canada, the Centre is a showcase of cutting edge building technology such as energy metering, smart automation and controls, innovative water and wastewater management, solar generation, green roofs, and geothermal heating and cooling. EcoStruxure Solution     HVAC Controls (Andover Continuum Building Management) —1000+ sensors     Lighting Controls (PowerLink/ Clipsal)     Power Monitoring (PowerLogic Meters/ ION-Enterprise) —84 metering points     Lighting Fixtures (Juno)     UPS (APC)     Security (Pelco Cameras)     Dual EV Charging Stations     EMIS (StruxureWare Energy Operation) In the initial phase of the project, Schneider Electric donated equipment and systems worth $375,000 to help Earth Rangers make their facility both energy and carbon neutral, and to complement their LEED Gold for New Construction certification with a LEED Platinum for Existing Buildings certification. This first installation included Schneider Electric building automation hardware and software, power monitoring and energy management tools, Juno lighting, Pelco cameras, and PowerLink/Clipsal lighting controls. An electrical vehicle charging system was eventually added to the overall solution. Though the initial project enabled significant energy savings, the customer wanted to achieve higher levels of building performance. This was accomplished in July of 2011, when Schneider Electric installed its StruxureWare Energy Operation EMIS at Earth Rangers Centre. By adding Energy Operation as part of the overall energy management solution, Earth Rangers now has the tools to easily and efficiently turn energy data into actionable information. This system leverages the downstream real-time monitoring and control systems and offers: ● facility operations personnel the tools to identify, analyze, and report on energy savings and sustainability initiatives ● managers the ability to validate the effectiveness of their energy savings initiatives and investments, helping document the true return on investment in dollars, kWh and CO2 saved ● an attractive, easy to understand public facing display kiosk to help communicate the Earth Rangers' mission and energy achievements to visitors of the centre and corporate website Customer benefits Schneider Electric's integrated energy management solution delivers the following benefits to Earth Rangers: • centralized key energy data into a single view for energy monitoring, analysis, and reporting • early detection of poor energy performance • effective performance reporting • auditing of historical operations • identification and justification of energy projects • evidence of success of energy initiatives • support for energy budgeting and management accounting • year-over-year energy reductions of 20% • In 2010, the 60,000 square foot Earth Ranger facility was operated 83% more efficient than the original Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB) base design case • On-site generation through solar PV arrays installed on the roof and in the parking lot have helped ERC become revenue neutral due to the subsidies provided through the Ontario FIT contract for on-site generation • 2011 year-to-date savings (vs. prior year):      o GHG savings: 444.2 tons CO2      o water recycling savings equal to 0.5 Olympic sized pools • The energy monitoring system has also allowed Earth Rangers to target multiple credits under LEED Existing Building, namely Energy and Atmosphere Credits 3.2 and 3.3 (system level metering), along with Water Efficiency Credit 1.1 (sub-metering and reporting) • Additional spill off credits resulting from the system can be seen in an estimated Energy Star rating of 97

  9. As the global specialist in energy management, our business itself helps tackling one of the major sustainable development challenge of today: climate change. Our sustainability commitment is aligned with our mission. It is based on five pillars: 1. Spreading Access to energy for those who need it the most We have a programme called BipBop for Business Innovation and People at the Base of the pyramid. The programme created n 2009 aims at helping develop a reliable, affordable green & sustainable access to energy to the people who need it the most The 1.4 billion people still deprived of energy today. For that we have an integrated approach based on a close interaction with local people including Products and solutions as well as Business models Training programmes so that local people have the skills to maintain, sell and develop Example: we have electrified almost 1M households since 01/2009, train almost 7000 young people and supported 200+ entrepreneurs Ex2: we have developed a led-based system called In-Diya that consumed 50% less than a regular light bulb, has a better lighting power and lifetime than any fuel-based existing solution and is much better for people health and wealth!!!: 2. Limiting the impact of our activity on the environment We want to lead by example in terms of carbon, and have the cleanest sites and greenest products. For that, we have : a drastic plan to reduce our energy consumption on sites, using our own solutions A systematic ISO 14001 certification of facilities A label called “Green Premium” to ensure our customers that our products comply with the most stringent environmental regulations (like Reach and RoHS) Ex: the headquarters of SE are a showcase of our solutions (divide by 20% energy savings in the first year of operation), first building in Europe to be certified NF16001 (energy management certification 3. Enhancing the well being of our people For our people, we put health & safety as a priority and thrive for people engagement Every meeting of the executive committee and in every plant starts by health & safety indicators review We measure the recommendation score of our own people in the same way we measure how our customer would recommend us as a supplier. 4. Supporting the development of communities where we operate The Schneider Electric Foundation federates our commitment to the Society, focusing on the training of unprivileged youth in our business to foster professional integration as well as reconstruction programmes after natural disasters. We also support local initiatives to help communities in more than 100 countries. 5. Ethics and responsibility in our operations and our industry: - We are a signatory of the United Nations Global Compact since 2002 - Internally, we have an ethical frame : Our Principles of Responsibility and Responsibility & Ethical Dynamics programme, the code of conduct for all of our employees to respect common principles Global engagements for a green and sustainable industry : we are engaged in global organisations such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Alliance to save, energy, Clinton Climate initiative, etc. the Green Grid for green IT, etc. Ex: part of our executive committee member performance is based on sustainability criteria EX: in 2010, we have joined the Word business council for sustainable development. Eventually, our sustainability approach relies on the regular measurement our commitment thanks to a unique tool, the Planet & Society Barometer that sums up our main priorities in terms of sustainability. It is rated on a scale of ten and the current one started in January 2011 and will end in December 2011, the end of our company programme. The results are communicated transparently, every quarter, externally and internally It is audited by and external auditor Sustainability is really part of Schneider Electric DNA
  10. The energy world is living a revolution. As always, the key success factor to change is people. Three changes have to operate. 1/ People have to change their behavior. They must change the way they make decisions about energy They have to be aware of the cost of their energy. Not only their energy bill. The whole lifecycle of their installation. Regulations can accelerate this change. For instance, buildings should be designed more efficient because regulations should impose it. It would cost far less over the life time of the building, Technology can also help changing behaviors. If you have a dashboard to monitor the cost of your energy in real time. If you see the effect of your actions on your daily consumption, you will make effort to change. 2/We need skills which do not exist today. We spoke about renewables and Energy Efficiency. Almost no school, no university prepares people to this specialty. It is our responsibility to train people. At Schneider Electric, we have launch our own Energy University with free classes on Energy efficiency, renewables, etc. We have partnership with the Universities of Shanghai Tsinghua on Energy efficiency. 3/ As it is a technology revolution, where many sectors have to speak to each other. We need to foster new collaborations between private and public, between companies which were not working together before. The world of today is collaborative. The energy sector must reflect this.

Minalogic has staked out a position as global leader in its domain, a unique hybrid of micro- and nano-technologies and embedded software. SE is involved in Smart electricity, Homes As an illustration, here is a brief description of the Homes program: Euros 88M project from 2008/2012 15 partners under our leadership Aim is to achieve at least 20% energy savings through energy efficient and intelligent solutions for buildings and homes If you need more details on what we do with Cisco Ex: Cisco EnergyWise partnerhip Thanks to Cisco EnergyWise, companies can: -Reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) footprint. -Monitor the power consumption of all Cisco network-connected devices, from Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices to IP-enabled building controllers. -Report aggregated power consumption to provide a clearer understanding of an organization's power-consumption habits. -Optimize overall power usage based on user-created policies across the entire corporate infrastructure. -Provide reports of current power conditions and suggests potential changes. -Regulate companywide energy consumption using scalable domain approach which brings IT and facility networks together => We collaborate with our building management systems
  12. Standard knowledge is that 25% of total life cycle cost of building is in the design and construction—but unfortunately, this is where many decisions are made that will affect the owners/operators of a building many years into the future.
  13. Certification ALONE is not the solution. http://newbuildings.org/sites/default/files/Energy_Performance_of_LEED-NC_Buildings-Final_3-4-08b.pdf From the New Buildings’ Institute report Energy Performance of LEED® for New Construction Buildings FINAL REPORT March 4, 2008 Additionally,  In 2009, the USGBC realized that 53% of buildings it certified through 2006 were not achieving Energy Star label status, based on measured energy consumption. Furthermore, 15% of these LEED certified buildings were actually performing in the bottom 30% of the comparable national building stock on an energy-per-sq-ft basis (Navarro 2009).
  14. Standard evaluation is based on conventional climate values, building envelope, equipment, occupancy … Calculated indicators allow comparison between building solutions and relative positioning on a conventional scale Applicability: Building Regulations & Energy Labels calculations Simulated evaluation is based on data that has been "refined" to match the characteristics of the proposed building (occupancy profile, FTE, climate, controls …) Indicators can be evaluated using dynamic simulation tools Used in Green Buildings Energy Performance Evaluation Measured evaluation is based on real life and takes into account implementation shortcomings such as Incorrect settings Actual operation of the building Actual behaviour and number of occupants Indicators are evaluated by measurements or by calculations based on measurements However, as for simulated evaluations, they still only represent a single shot
