9. Design Concept Statement
Design Concept Statement:
This design was inspired by Kabuki, which is a theatrical
spectacle combining form, color and sound into one of the
world’s great theatrical traditions. It combines three
performing arts and three kanji; ka which is song, bu which
is dance and ki meaning skill. The elements I used in this
design are all ones which are prominent in Kabuki theatre.
The fan with the eye portrays both a prop that is used
constantly and the dramatic makeup that is characteristic of
Kabuki. The black and red almost hut looking element is a
representation of the stages sets that the Kabuki plays were
held in. The circle in which the stage design and the fan
design are resting on signifies the sun, which is a motif
commonly used in Japan and design elements in Kabuki
costumes and stage sets. The cube on which rests the
flowing water like shapes embodies the shape of the stage,
while the flowing shapes represent the motifs used in
Kabuki stage sets for rocks, water and trees. All of these
shapes and elements combine to give a more full and
abstract depiction of Kabuki.
