Digital Storytelling Lesson Plan
Lesson Plan Title: Narrative – Describe a Personal Experience
Concept / Topic To Teach: Focus and Point of View in Describing an Experience
Standards Addressed: 5th grade - Listening and Speaking 1.4 - Select a focus, organizational
structure, and point of view for oral presentation
General Goal(s): Students will deliver a focused presentation that describes a past experience.
They will be focused on delivering this DS from their own point of you, using specific details to
take the viewer through the experience.
Specific Objectives: Students will demonstrate an understanding of narration and including only
details that help tell the story. They will also deliver the DS being aware of voice intonation and
the importance that it has when telling a story.
Required Materials: digital photos, microphone to record, computer with PhotoStory 3
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): I will show the students my prototype. We will discuss the event
(something that all students attended), choosing narration, and voice intonation.
Step-By-Step Procedures:
1. Review photo selection, narration, and voice intonation
2. Students will go through some pre-done narrations and practice reading them with good
voice intonation. We’ll discuss tips in writing good narrations and look at some samples
of well narrated digital stories.
3. Students will bring in digital photos and begin selecting the photos that will work in their
story.
4. We will get in groups and students will give each other feedback on the photos selected
for their project.
5. Students will create a storyboard of their story – I will check to see how students are
doing.
6. Students will talk to a partner and read their rough storyboard… give feedback too.
7. Students will upload their pictures and begin writing in their narration.
8. Students will record and add music to their DS.
9. We will present these to the class.

Focus and Point of View in Personal Narratives

Megan Gerdts Digital Storytelling- Summer Benicia July 13, 2010 Digital Storytelling Lesson Plan Lesson Plan Title: Narrative – Describe a Personal Experience Concept / Topic To Teach: Focus and Point of View in Describing an Experience Standards Addressed: 5th grade - Listening and Speaking 1.4 - Select a focus, organizational structure, and point of view for oral presentation General Goal(s): Students will deliver a focused presentation that describes a past experience. They will be focused on delivering this DS from their own point of you, using specific details to take the viewer through the experience. Specific Objectives: Students will demonstrate an understanding of narration and including only details that help tell the story. They will also deliver the DS being aware of voice intonation and the importance that it has when telling a story. Required Materials: digital photos, microphone to record, computer with PhotoStory 3 Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): I will show the students my prototype. We will discuss the event (something that all students attended), choosing narration, and voice intonation. Step-By-Step Procedures: 1. Review photo selection, narration, and voice intonation 2. Students will go through some pre-done narrations and practice reading them with good voice intonation. We’ll discuss tips in writing good narrations and look at some samples of well narrated digital stories. 3. Students will bring in digital photos and begin selecting the photos that will work in their story. 4. We will get in groups and students will give each other feedback on the photos selected for their project.
  • 2. 5. Students will create a storyboard of their story – I will check to see how students are doing. 6. Students will talk to a partner and read their rough storyboard… give feedback too. 7. Students will upload their pictures and begin writing in their narration. 8. Students will record and add music to their DS. 9. We will present these to the class.
