3. Woodie Guthrie was born in 1912 in
Oklahoma. After hard circunstances in
his life he decided to ramble around the
country.In exchange for bed and board
he painted signs and played the guitar
and sang in saloons along the
way, developing a love for travelling the
open road. He was also in favor of
workers´ rights and proved himself a
hard- hitting advocate for truth, fairness
and justice.

4. Bound for Glory
Guthrie was a prolific writer, filling
thousands of pages of unpublished poems
and prose. Guthrie also wrote a lot of
songs and worked on his autobiography.
The end product, Bound For Glory was
vividly told in the artist's down-home
dialect, with the flair and imagery of a true
storyteller.

5. The Asch recordings
In 1944, Guthrie met Moses
"Moe" Asch of Folkways
Records, for whom he first
recorded "This Land Is Your
Land". Over the next few
years, he recorded "Worried
Man Blues", along
with hundreds of other songs.

6. World War II years
Guthrie believed performing his anti-
fascist songs and poems at home was the
best use of his talents.He served in the
U.S Merchant Marine as a mess man and
dishwasher, and frequently sang for the
crew and troops. In 1945, Guthrie's
association with communism made him
ineligible for further service in the
Merchant Marine, and he was drafted
into the U.S. Army.

7. Mermaid Avenue
The years living on Mermaid Avenue in
Coney Island were among Guthrie's most
productive periods as a writer. During this
time Ramblin' Jack Elliottstudied
extensively under Guthrie, visiting his
home and observing how he wrote and
performed. Elliott, like Bob Dylan
later, idolized Guthrie and was inspired by
his idiomatic performance style and
repertoire.

8. Folk revival
In the late 1950s and early
1960s, a new generation of
young people were inspired by
folk singers including Guthrie.
These "folk revivalists" became
more politically aware in their
music than those of the
previous generation.
The American Folk Revival was
beginning to take place, focused
on the issues of the day, such as
the civil rights
movement and free speech
movement

9. Tributes
English anti-folk musician Billy
Bragg is one of several artists
influenced by Guthrie. He and
rock band Wilco recorded two
albums' worth of new music
containing his previously
unpublished lyrics.
Since his death, artists have
paid tribute to Guthrie
by covering his songs or by
dedicating songs to him

10. Posthumous
honors
Guthrie has continued to remain popular

decades after his death; this mural was
painted in his hometown of Okemah in
1994.
