general and nurse practitioners.

3. Practice Incentive Program
(PIP)
The Practice Incentive Programe is run by
Medicare Australia on behalf of the
Department of Health (DoH). It is designed to
promote quality care, accessibility and
improved patient outcomes.

4. Eligibility
Practice eligibility for the PIP is dependent on the
following criteria:
Practice is deemed to be an ‘open practice’ (where
practitioners provide in person Medicare Benefits Scheme
services to patients at a location, registered as the practice
address)
Practice maintains current public liability insurance.
Individual practitioners and nurses maintain professional
indemnity cover

5. Accreditation
• Practice must be
accredited and maintain
full accreditation (against
the RACGP standards);
OR
• Practice must be
registered for
accreditation and due to
obtain full accreditation
within 12 months

6. Payments
Payments are made to the
practice electronically and
are GST exempt
Payments are based on the
Standardised Whole Patient
Equivalent (SWPE)
Medicare lists three steps for
calculation of SWPE (ie: the
sum of the fractions of care
provided to patients with
weighting for age and
gender)

7. • The SWPE is based on the number of MBS claims by
patients attending the practice in the 12 month
reference period
• The reference period is a rolling 12 month period
that commences 16 months prior to payment
quarter
• All MBS services are included
• Practices must be participating and meeting the
eligibility criteria for the full quarter to receive
payment (see dates and ‘point in time’ at Medicare)

8. Practices obligations under the
PIP
Nominate a contact person who will be
responsible for administering the PIP – usually
the Practice Manager.
Substantiate all payment claims with the relevant
documentation
Provide true and accurate information
Inform the Department of Human Services of any
relevant change
Individual declarations for the PIP must be
signed and completed by each participating
practitioner (general and nurse).
