What is Social Networking?
What is Social Media Today?
• The means of interactions in which people create, share and
  exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and
  networks.

• It depends on mobile and web-based technologies to create
  highly interactive platforms through which individuals and
  communities share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-
  generated content. It introduces substantial and pervasive
  changes to communication between organizations,
  communities and individuals.

• How It differentiates from traditional/industrial media:
   • Quality, Reach, Frequency, Usability, Immediacy and Permanence

• Mobile-focus is coming & will change the landscape
Downside of Social Media
•   Exclusiveness from one platform to another.
•   Is the information trustworthy and reliable?
•   Uptick in cyber bullying and online sexual predators
•   Less face-to-face interaction, creating a detached society

• Refrigerators scared people when they first
  came into society because people
  stopped talking to each other on the
  front stoop.

It introduces substantial and pervasive changes to communication between organizations, communities and individuals. • How It differentiates from traditional/industrial media: • Quality, Reach, Frequency, Usability, Immediacy and Permanence • Mobile-focus is coming & will change the landscape
