Course Details:

This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking
skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a variety of informational
and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from various countries and cultures, and create oral, written,
and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be
on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is
intended to prepare students for college or the workplace.

Prerequisites:   ENG 3U1, ENG 3C1

Units: Fiction/ Non Fiction (Self Directed Novel study, short stories from anthologies,
articles)

Information Literacy

(Research processes and products like reports both short and long, group and individual
presentations)

Learning Literacy

(College oriented skills- writing, speaking, note taking, active listening, assessment and
evaluation, inquiry, technology; College oriented attitudes and mindsets- organization, self
direction, being proactive)

Media Literacy

(E-Media, Media History, Creating Media Campaigns)
Resources: Foundations of English 12, Reading and Writing for Success Senior, Course
Websites

Wiki, Google Docs)

Learning Skills: Students are provided with opportunities to develop and improve their
learning skills by:

Working Independently

Working as part of a team

Organizing

Completing homework and assignments

Taking Initiative

Developing self assessment and self evaluation techniques

Taking responsibility for their own learning

Teaching Strategies:

A range of instructional tactics will be used to address a variety of student needs. Some
tactics frequently employed in this course are: lecture, overhead, board notes, exemplars,
handouts, assigned and self directed readings, reflections, audio-visual aids, small groups,
pairs learning and a variety of technology based learning tools.




Assessment and Evaluation:
This course places a great deal of emphasis on the learning process and so students will be
given ample opportunity to practice and receive feedback (formative assessment) prior to
having their work judged (summative evaluation). Formative assessment includes quizzes,
drafts of various writing tasks, pairs and group assignments. Summative evaluation includes
short report writing, research essay, end of unit tests, individual and group oral
presentations, summative project, final exam.

Both Formative assessments and Summative Evaluations will be based on the Achievement
Chart with the following weighting:

Knowledge and Understanding 20%

Thinking and Inquiry 30%

Communication 30%

Application 20%

Marks for Term Work (70%) and the end of term Summatives (Final Exam - 20% & Final
Essay 10%) will be recorded under the following headings:

Writing 30%

Reading and Literature Studies 20%

Oral Communication 10%

Media Studies 10%

Communication: Students will be given informal updates of their progress at regular
intervals. Students may request and will be given access to their individual mark records in
a timely fashion. Students will be given their current mark at formal reporting periods.
Students are responsible for keeping track of their returned assignments as well as
employing the appropriate strategies for catching up on work missed due to absence/illness.
Extra help is available when arranged by appointment at either the teacher, student or
parent’s behest. Teachers will contact parents/guardians when issues of concern arise.
Parents/ guardians may contact the individual subject teacher at any time during the school
year.

Homework and self directed study: It is expected that students will complete all assigned
tasks as well as those chosen by the individual student in their self directed studies. Some
marks missed because of absence may not be recovered due to the nature of the task(s).

Cheating/ Plagiarism Policy:
As outlined in the Eastdale Student Agenda, any act of academic dishonesty including
plagiarism or cheating on quizzes, tests or assignments will not be tolerated and a mark of
zero will be assigned to all students involved. In addition to Administration being advised,
students caught plagiarizing will have their names on file in the English Department for the
duration of the school year.

  • 1. Grade 12, College Preparation Course ENG 4C1 2009-2010 Course Details: This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a variety of informational and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from various countries and cultures, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for college or the workplace. Prerequisites: ENG 3U1, ENG 3C1 Course Outline: On file in Principal’s Office Strands: Oral Communication Writing Literature Studies & Reading Media Studies Units: Fiction/ Non Fiction (Self Directed Novel study, short stories from anthologies, articles) Information Literacy (Research processes and products like reports both short and long, group and individual presentations) Learning Literacy (College oriented skills- writing, speaking, note taking, active listening, assessment and evaluation, inquiry, technology; College oriented attitudes and mindsets- organization, self direction, being proactive) Media Literacy (E-Media, Media History, Creating Media Campaigns)

Resources: Foundations of English 12, Reading and Writing for Success Senior, Course Websites Wiki, Google Docs) Learning Skills: Students are provided with opportunities to develop and improve their learning skills by: Working Independently Working as part of a team Organizing Completing homework and assignments Taking Initiative Developing self assessment and self evaluation techniques Taking responsibility for their own learning Teaching Strategies: A range of instructional tactics will be used to address a variety of student needs. Some tactics frequently employed in this course are: lecture, overhead, board notes, exemplars, handouts, assigned and self directed readings, reflections, audio-visual aids, small groups, pairs learning and a variety of technology based learning tools. Assessment and Evaluation:

This course places a great deal of emphasis on the learning process and so students will be given ample opportunity to practice and receive feedback (formative assessment) prior to having their work judged (summative evaluation). Formative assessment includes quizzes, drafts of various writing tasks, pairs and group assignments. Summative evaluation includes short report writing, research essay, end of unit tests, individual and group oral presentations, summative project, final exam. Both Formative assessments and Summative Evaluations will be based on the Achievement Chart with the following weighting: Knowledge and Understanding 20% Thinking and Inquiry 30% Communication 30% Application 20% Marks for Term Work (70%) and the end of term Summatives (Final Exam - 20% & Final Essay 10%) will be recorded under the following headings: Writing 30% Reading and Literature Studies 20% Oral Communication 10% Media Studies 10% Communication: Students will be given informal updates of their progress at regular intervals. Students may request and will be given access to their individual mark records in a timely fashion. Students will be given their current mark at formal reporting periods. Students are responsible for keeping track of their returned assignments as well as employing the appropriate strategies for catching up on work missed due to absence/illness. Extra help is available when arranged by appointment at either the teacher, student or parent’s behest. Teachers will contact parents/guardians when issues of concern arise. Parents/ guardians may contact the individual subject teacher at any time during the school year. Homework and self directed study: It is expected that students will complete all assigned tasks as well as those chosen by the individual student in their self directed studies. Some marks missed because of absence may not be recovered due to the nature of the task(s). Cheating/ Plagiarism Policy:

As outlined in the Eastdale Student Agenda, any act of academic dishonesty including plagiarism or cheating on quizzes, tests or assignments will not be tolerated and a mark of zero will be assigned to all students involved. In addition to Administration being advised, students caught plagiarizing will have their names on file in the English Department for the duration of the school year.
