  1. UCB: 172% growth in total recordings, 353% growth in total views in the 10-11 academic year
  2. Lecture Capture – How we got where we are today: 2007 CU School of Business renovation & expansion project completed, which featured 2 facilities dedicated to distance learning and classroom capture for their MBA programNote: capture solution was hardware-based (Mediasite), and Business ran their own Mediasite Server environment2008 CU School of Business expanded their capture capabilities with a portable hardware solution (also Mediasite)2009 OIT revised the technology model for large lecture halls through collaboration with faculty and departments. This included more advanced capabilities; classroom capture, dual projection, and a more advanced control system (Mediasite/Creston)A major objective of this model was to ensure that these capabilities would fit within the existing support model (self service, no dedicated local staffing)Fall 2009 – Spring 2010: ran our classroom capture pilot in first updated large lecture hallContent hosted offsite by Sonic FoundrySummer 2010: deployed updated large lecture hall standards (incl. capture) in two additional locationsCHEM 142, HUMN 1B50OIT deployed centralized Mediasite Server environment, ending remote hostingFall 2010: OIT secured a CU-system-wide pricing agreement for Mediasite recorders, and subsidized the server environment across the system; CU Colorado Springs leveraged this service and CU Boulder began hosting their content
  3. Sample view of Mediasite viewing in web browser; note the Zoom tool icon in upper right corner of main window, and navigation tools along the bottom.
  4. UCB: 172% growth in total recordings, 353% growth in total views in the 10-11 academic yearSummer 2011: deployed capture and new (revised again) large lecture hall technology standards in a fourth locationAs both adoption and deployments increased in the large lecture halls at UCB, collaboration with campus entities revealed a need for a capture solution in smaller teaching and learning spaces, and for a less expensive means of providing suchOIT staff collaborated with faculty and campus groups to assess the needs, and developed a hardware prototype at a low cost (approx. $1,000) which offers capabilities not only for capture via software tools, but other distance learning, collaboration, and conferencing solutions
  5. UCCS: 59% growth in total recordings, 38% growth in total views from Spring ‘11 to Fall ’11.
  6. There is another population on campus wanting to record lecturesAnyone wanting to record lectures that isn’t teaching a regular class in the 3 large lecture hallsFrom our assessments of student perceptions, students have reported they want more faculty to record lecturesDifficult to reserve large rooms, in use most of the waking hoursDifficult to staff and support for individual and one off requests
  7. Why are we looking for something else?Have had multiple and varying requests Everything under the suncarrying a camcorder into a classroomOne off recording when need to miss classOne off recording of special eventsScreen recordings and audio only in an office and in a classroomScreen recording, video and audio
  8. Swiss army knife/Inspector Gadget approachPortableSmallVersatilePanopto, Echo 360, Camtasia Relay, Skype, google hangout any platformEasy to useCheapCost is approx. $1,000 for all components shown.
  9. Pilot projects-Theatre and Dance – every day, student recordings for peer review, have outside partner skyping inALTEC – recording one time events, workshops to make available on their websiteAsian Languages – in class student recordings, skits for language learningEBIO – Flipped Lecture styleEach of these need a place for their recordings to live…..
  10. Users have so many tools available to them to use to accomplish similar goals, it is a challenge to decide what to do.For end users watching it, it is downright impossible to navigate the various sites-How do I log in?-My dog ate the link, where do I go?-Which one of these can handle my situation?
  11. There are too many sources for streaming mediaThey aren’t integrated into a single “portal” to access them for end user.We were using iTunesU private for music reserves, which can be downloaded and violates policies.Multiple servers have to be managed and scaled to handle streamed contentstoragecampus network bandwidthno CDN
  12. Procure a Rich Media Enterprise Streaming tool that can handle many input sources and output streams – provide an ecosystem for media flow on campusWe need the glue that puts all the sources together (class capture, webcams, ppt recordings, live streams, student and faculty media uploads, library and course media, etc)Take many formats of mediaConvert to all device readable formatsProvide CDN services for playbackProvide live streaming capabilityIntegrate with OLE’s like Bb and D2L
  13. Any vendor can do this in this space, we chose Kaltura, others good too.We want all our sources in one place-single site to scale up in storage-single site to scale CDN access-don’t need clustered., storage environments for all the sources (mediasiteetc)Billed by bandwidth not disk
  14. Procure a Rich Media Enterprise Streaming tool that can handle many input sources and output streamsCan ingest media from sources likelecture capture solutionsHD camerasdesktop recording toolsStreams can be embedded and played frompersonal websitesa YouTube-like CU interfaceDesire2Learn OLE
  15. Select a vendor that can do this for us!Vendor demo process with campus stakeholders (50)Presentations and RFI with Kaltura, MediaCAST, ShareStream, BrightcoveDecision support tool to select KalturaProcure and start hard work implementingNote adda picture here….
  16. Solution in cloud up and running in 2 weeks, details to work out take much, MUCH longer.Support processes with stakeholder partners (libraries, college of music, law school)provide administrative accounts with full access to manage their own environments, embed onto own websitesfocus on this and moving ituensu music reserves first (done!)
  17. Use Desire2Learn to upload and view rich media for faculty, staff, and studentsKaltura has deep integration with D2L and BbWe are finding many bugs with the first releaseAlso provide an easy to use CUTube (now CU Media Stream) outside of D2L
  18. Have all supported lecture capture solutions integrate into Kaltura as the feeder point to single portal like useMediasite, Panopto, Echo360, CamtasiaCamtasia Relay already has workflow for this that we are testingPanopto is working with Kaltura now to provide thisMediasite is talking with Kaltura but on a delayed path (might need to use Media Vodcast to handle this in interim)
  19. Dependent on LC vendors partnering togetherIntegration piece with OLEsLots of variability in how users’ laptops respond to hardware and softwareWhere to upload, view, store, archiveThe Law - FERPABe everything to everybodyLibraries overlapAccessibility and captioningFaculty concerns – will students come to class who owns the content you won’t need me anymore
  20. UCB: 172% growth in total recordings, 353% growth in total views in the 10-11 academic year
