An engaging way for secondary students of English as a foreign language to produce their own poems in group, as well as approaching them to literature.

Materials: Magazines, newspapers, leaflets…
Aim: improving students’ writing and approaching them to literature
Preparation: if you live in an English-speaking area, you could tell your students to
bring the materials from local tourist info offices, restaurants…

Procedure:
1st. Students are arranged in groups (three to five).
2nd. Explain activity:
- You want them to produce their own poems.
- It involves cutting, so tell them to be neat and tidy!
- Show you students some examples of the final production.
3rd. If students have not brought their own materials, take a few pages out
of each of yours/other groups so that everyone can have a bit of each
publication.

4th. Allow only 10 of cutting! It is very addictive!
5th. Tell them to group words into different categories to make the task easier:
nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions…
6th. Remind them to watch punctuation.
7th. Allow only 10 minutes for cutting too.
8th. Finally, groups present their works to the class.

Some advice:
• Stick to timing to make the most of it and not to waste time.
• Collect the spare words for future occasions.
• Provide lower levels with extra vocabulary beforehand.
