Alexander Wang led a dance party in a department store. And Vogue's Anna Wintour wore a (gasp) T-shirt.
It could only be Fashion's Night Out, the one-night celebration dreamed up by Wintour to lure shoppers into stores and revive the flagging fashion industry. The event, started in New York last year during Fashion Week, fanned out to 100 cities around the country on Friday, and 16 countries planned their own versions.
Wintour made a stop at Ralph Lauren, where she posed in a Fashion's Night Out T-shirt with David Lauren and Halle Berry. She said the event had grown in a year quot;
by slightly epic proportions.quot;
quot;
We have to get out there and have people have fun,quot;
she said. quot;
We have to spread fashion and do something good for the economy.quot;
Madison Avenue was packed with taxis as shoppers crowded the sidewalks. Hundreds of people lined up outside Bergdorf Goodman, where huge crowds flocked to see Victoria Beckham and Mary J. Blige, who came out to promote her eyewear line.
quot;
We love you Mary!quot;
shouted fans. Among them was Michelle Blackman, a 37-year-old attorney from Brooklyn who was planning to spend.
quot;
I'm definitely going to be buying shoes tonight,quot;
said Blackman, who planned to spend anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000. quot;
I'll put some money into the economy.quot;
Designers including Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Lela Rose and Thakoon Panichgul trotted out their dogs for a modeling contest, dressed in duds from top hats to wedding gowns to boas. Crowds grew so big it was hard to use the escalators or leave the store.
quot;
You don't see this much excitement at stores,quot;
said Badgley as he surveyed the crowd while holding his beagle Ramel, dressed in a top hat and tuxedo. The design team's beagles were dressed as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Last year's extended hours and blitz of promotions did provide a sales lift for New York City merchants, said Michael McNamara, vice president of research and analysis for MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse, which includes transactions in all forms such as cash.
Luxury purveyors definitely need a boost. After enjoying rebounding sales earlier in the year, many upscale merchants have seen their U.S. customers pull back again since the spring amid signs of a halting economic recovery.
quot;
The psyche of the luxury shopper has changed,quot;
said Robert Burke, a New York-based luxury consultant. quot;
The idea of spending $2,000 to $3,000 on something that's identifiable to just one season isn't there.quot;
The idea of Fashion's Night out is to get customers excited about shopping - without the discounts.
In Los Angeles, a Ferris wheel on Rodeo Drive gave complementary rides to shoppers. Music poured onto West Hollywood's Melrose Avenue from participating shops.
At Beckley, a boutique carrying everything from cocktail dresses to T-shirts, shoppers sipped on vodka basil lemonades, snacked on Diane Von Furstenburgers and Fendi Fries from a food truck and were treated to hair touch-ups from Warren-Tricomi stylists - because one must look fab while shopping in this trendy district, home to the only Balenciaga and Christian Louboutin shops in all of Los Angeles. Beckley also offered pedicabs to cart shoppers through town.
Owner Melissa Akkaway said she was pleased with the turnout.
quot;
We'd definitely participate next year,quot;
she said.
Next door at luxury lingerie shop Coco de Mer, hula-hooping burlesque dancer Kelleia Sherrin wowed shoppers with her sexy moves and enviable abs. Miami held a block party for shoppers, while Bellevue, Wash., had shopping by candlelight. Cirque du Soleil performed around the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
Neiman Marcus planned different events around the country - a runway show in Denver, a design-your-own cupcake bar in Minneapolis and a competition between stylists in Dallas, for example.
But with the fashion crowd gathered for Fashion Week, the events with the highest star wattage were scattered throughout New York.
At Barneys, Alexander Wang joined a dance party with a megaphone and shouted for customers to dance their unprintables off. Designers Jeff Halmos and Sam Shipley faced off against fans in ping-pong. A huge crowd gathered for a karaoke contest judged by the Olsen twins.
Campbell was at Dolce & Gabbana promoting T-shirts with photos of herself at different points in her career, to celebrate her 25th anniversary in fashion. Campbell, who has been brushing off the attention she got earlier this year at the Hague, said she and the designers had asked themselves quot;
What could we do that's fun? And dancing is fun.quot;
Oscar de la Renta took a similar approach. At the narrow, packed store on Madison Avenue, a 12-piece merengue band performed while professional dancers from a Latin ballroom studio whipped guests into the mood to dance - even if there was only really room for most of them to bop in place while sipping champagne and munching on ceviche.
Standing with feet planted firmly on the sidelines was dance luminary Mikhail Baryshnikov, the advertised celebrity. But de la Renta delighted the crowd by dancing a few steps himself.
Jessica Alba, at Polo Ralph Lauren in SoHo, said she came to New York just for the event.
quot;
It's a perfect way to boost the economy and hang out with some friends, have a little champagne and shop all night,quot;
she said.
The party at a Hyatt turned out to be a manly fantasy. The ultra-sleek Andaz boutique hotel owned by the chain hosted a party with pork buns and kimchi apple salad by Momofuku's David Chang and whiskeys from eight artisinal manufacturers.
quot;
Models. Whiskey. Meat. It's a man's dream,quot;
said Rachel Harrison, the hotel's spokeswoman.
A highlight was a cocktail called The September Issue endorsed by Vogue food critic Jeffrey Steingarten made with rye and chilled with liquid nitrogen. A few of those were required to brave the savagery when fashionistas demanded pork.
---
AP writers Anne D'Innocenzio, Sandy Cohen, Jocelyn Noveck, Leanne Italie, Lisa Orkin Emmanuel, Mark Kennedy and Lisa Tolin contributed to this report.
6081395-386080
THE HUFFINGTON POSTOnlineSEPTEMBER 11, 2010MONTHLY READERSHIP: 12,622,200
Read More: Fashion Night Out 2010, Fashion's Night Out 2010, Fashion's Night Out Los Angeles, La Around Town, Slidepollajax, Los Angeles News
Fashion's Night Out is in it's second year, and this time Los Angeles (and West Hollywood, and Santa Monica...) is doing it up big. From a ferris wheel on Rodeo Drive to a Justin Timberlake meet-and-greet at Santa Monica Place, LA's fashionistas will be amply entertained while they quot;
shop for good.quot;
For more low-key shoppers, there are plenty of deals, door prizes, and DJs at West Hollywood, Los Feliz, Robertson Boulevard, and Abbot Kinney boutiques. Southern California was barely represented, with a few local scattered efforts staged at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills and the Fred Segal Center on Melrose Avenue.What a difference a year makes. For the sophomore effort on Friday, Sept. 10, Southern California is fielding a
slate of highly organized, quot;
Vogue-sanctionedquot;
events, stretching from Newport Beach to Pasadena, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's Office of Economic and Business Policy is rallying retailers.
Fashion's Night Out: An article in Sunday's Image section about events planned for Fashion's Night Out on Friday said that a Julia Clancey runway show was slated for the Andaz West Hollywood's RH bar. A Julia Clancey pop-up shop is planned. —
Following are highlights of planned Fashion's Night Out activities in three cities — Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and West Hollywood — within whose borders some 300 assorted and sundry parties, personal appearances, shopping discounts and the like will occur simultaneously.Beverly HillsSixty-seven retailers have signed up to mark FNO in the 90210, which will have a decidedly circus-like atmosphere — thanks to a four-story-tall Ferris wheel set up in the 200 block of North Rodeo Drive. (Rides are free — if you have a proof-of-purchase receipt from one of the evening's participating stores.)Among the events scheduled for the evening: at Giorgio Armani, actor Samuel L. Jackson will host an exhibition of his favorite red carpet looks over the years, displayed on mannequins and accompanied by a question-and-answer session with fashion critic Steven Cojocaru from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (reservations, which can be made at , are recommended), Chanel will be offering free manicures with its new collection of polishes, and the Lacoste boutique will be the site of a Wii tennis tournament.There will be no shortage of parties. Valentino, for example, is having a casino night. DJs Super Mash Bros. will be spinning at Emporio Armani, while DJ Rick Khan has been tapped for Roberto Cavalli's bash. Geary's will host a quot;
gentleman's loungequot;
with Scotch, beer, hors d'oeuvres and some heavy-duty models — of Rolex and Patek Phillipe timepieces, that is.At 6 p.m., a life-size celebrity version of the fashion trivia board game Fashion Rules will begin at the foot of the Ferris wheel on Rodeo, and is set to include singer/actress Kelly Osbourne, quot;
Dancing With the Starsquot;
judge Carrie Ann Inaba, stylist George Kotsiopoulos and Vogue's West Coast editor Lisa Love.Tod's is selling a limited-edition handbag for the event, Salvatore Ferragamo is celebrating its first collection from new Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti with the launch of his W-bag purse Mikimoto will be featuring pearl-stringing demonstrations and Coach will have artists on hand to customize merchandise.Organizers also have made sure that Rodeo Drive revelers will be able to fill their stomachs as easily as they empty their wallets, promising the famed thoroughfare will be lined with gourmet food trucks serving a variety of fare including kimchi-topped French fries and architecturally themed ice cream sandwiches.Beverly Hills' Fashion's Night Out, centered on Rodeo Drive, runs 6 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10. Additional information and updates are available at the Rodeo Drive Committee's website: http://www.rodeodrive-bh.com/fashionsnightout.html.Los AngelesThe beige box that dominates the intersection of La Cienega and Beverly boulevards is shaping up to dominate this year's local FNO efforts — and not just for the benefit of its own tenants.In partnership with the mayor's office, the Beverly Center will function as the hub, headquarters and starting point for the city's FNO events, with free parking (starting at 4 p.m.) and no-cost busses to ferry shoppers to six retail districts centered on Melrose Avenue, Robertson Boulevard, West 3rd Street, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, downtown Los Angeles and Los Feliz.As befits Hollywood, the night of extended shopping will kick off with red carpet arrivals at the Beverly Center at 4 p.m., as VIPs, celebrities and invitees turning out to hear remarks from the mayor, who is slated to speak at a 5 p.m. news conference alongside Vogue's Lisa Love, L.A.-based designer Randolph Duke, skateboarder/reality TV star Rob Dyrdek and Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am.The Beverly Center has promised the first 100 shoppers a free Fashion's Night Out Los Angeles T-shirt — designed by FIDM student Marc Blaskovits. (The shirt will be sold at the mall and other participating spots around Los Angeles — including Fred Segal on Melrose, The Grove and Intermix and Udrest, which are both on Robertson, among others — for $15 each. Proceeds will help fund scholarships for fashion students.)A fashion show of fall looks featuring some of the Beverly Center's retailers (including Forever 21, Bebe, Ben Sherman and Traffic, among others) will be staged in the mall's sixth-floor central area at 5:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. In between, Macy's is scheduled to host a quot;
Denim Rocksquot;
runway show, highlighting local denim brands, at 6:30 p.m.
In addition Charles David founder Charles Malka is scheduled to do an in-store shoe signing (in the Beverly Center) from 6 to 9 p.m. William Rast co-founders Tracy Ayala and Justin Timberlake will be hosting a sneak peek at their label's new footwear collection and a special FNO eyewear collection at the William Rast flagship store at Westfield Century City from 8 to 9 p.m. (Earlier the pair will do the same at the Nordstrom at Santa Monica Place from 6 to 7 p.m.)Throughout the night, the Fred Segal Center on Melrose promises appearances by Quiksilver's surfing team, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh (who will sign copies of his book quot;
Beautiful Mutantsquot;
) and the guys behind Spirit Hoods, who will be on hand to make sure that any of their animal-shaped hats that are purchased are worn jauntily askew.Taylor Jacobson (formerly with quot;

event — with a cocktail party featuring special guest designer Alexis Phifer. 6 to 9 p.m.
There's also some added incentive to pry open the wallet within city limits on Friday night: Anyone (21 and older) who can brandish receipts totaling $25 from a participating Los Angeles FNO retailer will have entrée into a post-shopping fete at SBE's Industry nightclub, on La Cienega Boulevard,, which will include fashion presentations by some of the designers who call the city home, including Kevan Hall, Sue Wong, Louis Verdad and Petro Zillia's Nony Tochterman. A second party, at SBE's XIV, on Sunset Boulevard, subject to the same entrance requirements, will feature fashion-themed drinks. Both bashes will run from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.Los Angeles' Fashion's Night Out festivities are scheduled to run 6 to 10 p.m., with free parking at — and shuttle service from — the Beverly Center for the duration. A full list of participating retailers as well as a printable map, can be found at city's FNO site: http://www.fno.lacity.org.West HollywoodFNO WeHo is a little city going big: The 1.9-square-mile community of West Hollywood had lined up 28 participants, including Chrome Hearts, Vera Wang, Nicole Miller and the Sunset Plaza shopping center, for events, appearances and parties.A Julia Clancey runway show is slated for the Andaz West Hollywood's RH bar, James Jean artwork will be on display at the 3.1 Phillip Lim boutique, and, in what will no doubt be one of the evening's popular spectator sports events, the Andrew Christian underwear boutique will be holding a Twister competition from 8 to 10 p.m. featuring models wearing nothing more than their skivvies.For shoppers — and aspiring rock gods — who don't mind dropping $300 at the John Varvatos boutique on Robertson, celebrity rock photographer Robert Knight will be on hand to shoot your portrait.The Sunset Plaza shopping center is planning a party complete with aural ambience courtesy of live DJs and a runway show of fall fashion from the center's retailers. (The price of admission is an FNO proof of purchase.)West Hollywood's Fashion's Night Out runs from 6 to 10 p.m., with free shuttle service for the duration. Dinner
A-list Los Angelenos gathered to fete Silvia Venturini Fendi
By Marshall Heyman
The last time Silvia Venturini Fendi, a creative director at her family's 83-year-old fashion dynasty, came to Los Angeles, the circumstances were rather extraordinary. Her parents had shipped her to the celebrity-filled oasis at 21, after she narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt in Rome. They installed her as a salesgirl in their Rodeo Drive store and gave her a red Mustang convertible. Over the course of three months, she fell for a boy from Brazil. quot;
He's my big love,quot;
Fendi told her mother before taking off with him to Rio de Janeiro, marrying him, and having two kids.
SEE LOOKBOOOK: FENDI'S L.A. DINNER
More than two decades, a second husband, another child, and about 1,000 variations of the Baguette bag later, Fendi returned to L.A. (from her hometown, Rome) in mid-February for a whirlwind trip. The conditions were far less dramatic, however. She came to celebrate the reopening of the recently redesigned Rodeo Drive boutique and the 10th anniversary of the Baguette. quot;
It's like when you redo your house,quot;
she explained. quot;
Things evolve.quot;
To commemorate Fendi's long-awaited return to the city, Linda Evangelista, the only person ever to have a Fendi bag named after her, opened the Holmby Hills home she shares with Hard Rock Cafe founder and avid art collector Peter Morton for an intimate dinner. quot;
Silvia is one of the most delightful, normal people I've met in this business,quot;
said Evangelista, who was upset only that she didn't get to bid on 10 one-of-a-kind Baguettes, hand decorated by artists like Will Cotton, Rachel Feinstein, Jeff Koons, and Francesco Vezzoli, that were on display that evening in the store. (Proceeds benefited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.)
quot;
Lauren Taschen outbid me on the Koons,quot;
said cohost Maria Bell. quot;
I went to $18,000!quot;
New York social Fabiola Beracasa fiddled with her chartreuse lambskin micro Baguette. quot;
This afternoon, [Fendi CEO] Michael Burke told me that to raise the logo, they inject it with silicone,quot;
Beracasa said. quot;
I told him, 'God, that's so L.A.'quot;
Evangelista surprised Amber Valletta with a birthday cake. quot;
She's one of my best friends, but I don't know how old she is,quot;
she confessed. Then again, Evangelista recently told a makeup artist she was 41, only to call later to say she was 42. quot;
I forgot! But I didn't want her to think I was lying. I have to take ginkgo biloba, but then I forget that too.quot;
To put a perfect cap on the evening, LACMA director and CEO and husband of LVMH's Katherine Ross, Michael Govan, led Fendi and a few dinner guests on a private midnight tour of the new Broad Contemporary Art Museum. quot;
I have to leave tomorrow,quot;
Fendi said, somewhat bittersweetly. quot;
But we have many reasons to return.quot;

Hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue, she and husband Jason Sehorn were about to be presented with the Champion of Children Award by Betsy Bloomingdale for their contributions to children's causes and youth issues in L.A. like the Alliance for Children’s Rights, the Stuart House, P.S. Arts and Kids Give. Sehorn also has his own foundation called Sehorn’s Corner, which aids single-parent families. quot;
I am happy to say I have the same size waistline as Angie Harmon,quot;
Bloomingdale professed.
The reason for Harmon's embarrassment? quot;
My husband and I fly under the radar when it comes to our charitable commitments,quot;
she explained. quot;
I always think it's weird when celebrities have camera crews around when they're doing charity work. I could barely get up the nerve to tell my parents I was getting this award,quot;
she admitted. quot;
How do you tell your parents Nancy Reagan decided you were worthy of an award from her group? The woman is amazing.quot;
Mrs. Reagan turned out in a white Chanel suit and posed for photos with Harmon and Sehorn, and stayed for the entire Oscar de la Renta fall fashion show in the ballroom after lunch.
Angie's proud dad Larry Harmon came in from Dallas for the event. quot;
There are no words to describe my pride in her,quot;
he gushed. quot;
If I knew she would turn out this way, I would have had ten kids. And if I knew she'd marry someone as great as Jason, I would have had twenty!quot;
Where a great charity goes, great fashion follows. Harmon wore a brown, black and white print Oscar dress finished off with taupe Jimmy Choos. quot;
The Oscar folks sent ten looks to my stylist, Tara Swennen,quot;
said Harmon. quot;
And I chose this one. I'm a sucker for a full skirt, and I love this print.quot;
Also wearing Oscar was young actress Kate Mara, in a white dress with cream embellishment. quot;
I didn't know anything about this group of women,quot;
she admitted. quot;
I just wanted to see Oscar's fall show.quot;
The Colleagues do include some of L.A.'s most charitable and pre-eminent ladies: Barbara Davis, Nancy Davis, Lianne Weintraub, Lisa Rinna, and Garcelle Beauvais. Also in the crowd were Julia Moran, Ever Carradine, Colleen Bell, Jenny Belushi, Susan Casden, Carla Sands and Shannon Rotenberg. Susan Casden, in vintage de la Renta, was busy taking collection notes. “It’s never too early to think about next season!quot;
she said. This major traveling retrospective includes key selections spanning the artist’s career, from the early 1990s to the present. More than 90 works in various media—painting, sculpture, installation, and film—are installed in five sections, occupying over 35,000 square feet of exhibition space. The first portion features many of Murakami’s acclaimed large-scale otaku-inspired sculptural figures from the late 1990s. The second section comprises a grid-like shelving display of Murakami’s merchandise. A fully operational Louis Vuitton boutique, showcasing the artist’s collaboration with the designer brand, is on the mezzanine level. The largest portion of the exhibition traces Murakami’s artistic development, including early works that engage branding and the evolution of his signature character, DOB. Of particular importance, is the debut of Oval Buddha, an enormous self-portrait sculpture in the guise of a Buddha, and the premiere of part one of the artist’s first major animated film, kaikai & kiki. New installments of kaikai & kiki will continue at the exhibition tour venue
In recent years, connections between fashion and architecture have become increasingly apparent. Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture examines shared strategies and techniques of the two disciplines, highlighting common ground and suggesting potential for the future development of each, including new design processes, fabrication methods, and aesthetic directions.
shigeru ban hussein chalayan preston scott cohen comme des garcons neil m. denari architects diller scofidio + renfro winka dubbeldam / archi-tectonics eisenman architects alber elbaz for lanvin foreign office architects future systems frank gehry tess giberson zaha hadid herzog & de meuron yoshiki hishinuma toyo ito jakob + macfarlane greg lynn form elena manferdini maison martin margiela alexander mcqueen miralles tagliabue / embt miyake issey morphosis neutelings riedijk jean nouvel office da oma / rem koolhaas narciso rodriguez ralph rucci sanaa nanni strada yeohlee teng testa & weiser olivier theyskens isabel Toledo bernard tschumi dries van noten viktor & rolf junya watanabe vivienne westwood wilkinson eyre yohji yamamoto j. meejin yoon / my studio
Fashion's Night Out Events Across US Cities Boost Sales

 • 1. Melanie Brister
Projects: Events and Press
Coverage
ASSOCIATED PRESSOnline and PrintSeptember 11, 2010PICKED UP BY MORE THAN 50 OUTLETS NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY TOTAL MONTHLY READERSHIP: Total 210,000,000 +
4965065260350NEW YORK (AP) -- Naomi Campbell danced on the sidewalk of Madison Avenue in leather hotpants.
Wintour made a stop at Ralph Lauren, where she posed in a Fashion's Night Out T-shirt with David Lauren and Halle Berry. She said the event had grown in a year quot; by slightly epic proportions.quot;
quot; We have to get out there and have people have fun,quot; she said. quot; We have to spread fashion and do something good for the economy.quot;
Madison Avenue was packed with taxis as shoppers crowded the sidewalks. Hundreds of people lined up outside Bergdorf Goodman, where huge crowds flocked to see Victoria Beckham and Mary J. Blige, who came out to promote her eyewear line.
quot; We love you Mary!quot; shouted fans. Among them was Michelle Blackman, a 37-year-old attorney from Brooklyn who was planning to spend.
quot; I'm definitely going to be buying shoes tonight,quot; said Blackman, who planned to spend anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000. quot; I'll put some money into the economy.quot;
Designers including Mark Badgley and James Mischka, Lela Rose and Thakoon Panichgul trotted out their dogs for a modeling contest, dressed in duds from top hats to wedding gowns to boas. Crowds grew so big it was hard to use the escalators or leave the store.
quot; You don't see this much excitement at stores,quot; said Badgley as he surveyed the crowd while holding his beagle Ramel, dressed in a top hat and tuxedo.
After enjoying rebounding sales earlier in the year, many upscale merchants have seen their U.S. customers pull back again since the spring amid signs of a halting economic recovery.
quot; The psyche of the luxury shopper has changed,quot; said Robert Burke, a New York-based luxury consultant. quot; The idea of spending $2,000 to $3,000 on something that's identifiable to just one season isn't there.quot;
Owner Melissa Akkaway said she was pleased with the turnout.
quot; We'd definitely participate next year,quot; she said.
Campbell was at Dolce & Gabbana promoting T-shirts with photos of herself at different points in her career, to celebrate her 25th anniversary in fashion. Campbell, who has been brushing off the attention she got earlier this year at the Hague, said she and the designers had asked themselves quot; What could we do that's fun? And dancing is fun.quot;
Jessica Alba, at Polo Ralph Lauren in SoHo, said she came to New York just for the event.
quot; It's a perfect way to boost the economy and hang out with some friends, have a little champagne and shop all night,quot; she said.
The party at a Hyatt turned out to be a manly fantasy. The ultra-sleek Andaz boutique hotel owned by the chain hosted a party with pork buns and kimchi apple salad by Momofuku's David Chang and whiskeys from eight artisinal manufacturers.
quot; Models. Whiskey. Meat. It's a man's dream,quot; said Rachel Harrison, the hotel's spokeswoman.
Fashion's Night Out is in it's second year, and this time Los Angeles (and West Hollywood, and Santa Monica...) is doing it up big. From a ferris wheel on Rodeo Drive to a Justin Timberlake meet-and-greet at Santa Monica Place, LA's fashionistas will be amply entertained while they quot; shop for good.quot; For more low-key shoppers, there are plenty of deals, door prizes, and DJs at West Hollywood, Los Feliz, Robertson Boulevard, and Abbot Kinney boutiques. For a complete list of participating stores, check out Fashion's Night Out.
6022340-279400
24765225425
By Adam Tschorn Los Angeles Times
September 5, 2010
Last year's first installment of Fashion's Night Out, an effort to jump-start a sagging industry with an evening full of shopping events in major cities all over the world that was brought to us by New York-based Vogue magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, was, not surprisingly, very Manhattan-centric. Southern California was barely represented, with a few local scattered efforts staged at Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills and the Fred Segal Center on Melrose Avenue.What a difference a year makes. For the sophomore effort on Friday, Sept. 10, Southern California is fielding a
slate of highly organized, quot; Vogue-sanctionedquot; events, stretching from Newport Beach to Pasadena, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's Office of Economic and Business Policy is rallying retailers.
Fashion's Night Out: An article in Sunday's Image section about events planned for Fashion's Night Out on Friday said that a Julia Clancey runway show was slated for the Andaz West Hollywood's RH bar. A Julia Clancey pop-up shop is planned. —
Following are highlights of planned Fashion's Night Out activities in three cities — Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and West Hollywood — within whose borders some 300 assorted and sundry parties, personal appearances, shopping discounts and the like will occur simultaneously.Beverly HillsSixty-seven retailers have signed up to mark FNO in the 90210, which will have a decidedly circus-like atmosphere — thanks to a four-story-tall Ferris wheel set up in the 200 block of North Rodeo Drive. (Rides are free — if you have a proof-of-purchase receipt from one of the evening's participating stores.)Among the events scheduled for the evening: at Giorgio Armani, actor Samuel L. Jackson will host an exhibition of his favorite red carpet looks over the years, displayed on mannequins and accompanied by a question-and-answer session with fashion critic Steven Cojocaru from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (reservations, which can be made at , are recommended), Chanel will be offering free manicures with its new collection of polishes, and the Lacoste boutique will be the site of a Wii tennis tournament.There will be no shortage of parties. Valentino, for example, is having a casino night. DJs Super Mash Bros. will be spinning at Emporio Armani, while DJ Rick Khan has been tapped for Roberto Cavalli's bash. Geary's will host a quot; gentleman's loungequot; with Scotch, beer, hors d'oeuvres and some heavy-duty models — of Rolex and Patek Phillipe timepieces, that is.At 6 p.m., a life-size celebrity version of the fashion trivia board game Fashion Rules will begin at the foot of the Ferris wheel on Rodeo, and is set to include singer/actress Kelly Osbourne, quot; Dancing With the Starsquot; judge Carrie Ann Inaba, stylist George Kotsiopoulos and Vogue's West Coast editor Lisa Love.Tod's is selling a limited-edition handbag for the event, Salvatore Ferragamo is celebrating its first collection from new Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti with the launch of his W-bag purse Mikimoto will be featuring pearl-stringing demonstrations and Coach will have artists on hand to customize merchandise.Organizers also have made sure that Rodeo Drive revelers will be able to fill their stomachs as easily as they empty their wallets, promising the famed thoroughfare will be lined with gourmet food trucks serving a variety of fare including kimchi-topped French fries and architecturally themed ice cream sandwiches.Beverly Hills' Fashion's Night Out, centered on Rodeo Drive, runs 6 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 10. Additional information and updates are available at the Rodeo Drive Committee's website: http://www.rodeodrive-bh.com/fashionsnightout.html.Los AngelesThe beige box that dominates the intersection of La Cienega and Beverly boulevards is shaping up to dominate this year's local FNO efforts — and not just for the benefit of its own tenants.In partnership with the mayor's office, the Beverly Center will function as the hub, headquarters and starting point for the city's FNO events, with free parking (starting at 4 p.m.) and no-cost busses to ferry shoppers to six retail districts centered on Melrose Avenue, Robertson Boulevard, West 3rd Street, Abbot Kinney Boulevard, downtown Los Angeles and Los Feliz.As befits Hollywood, the night of extended shopping will kick off with red carpet arrivals at the Beverly Center at 4 p.m., as VIPs, celebrities and invitees turning out to hear remarks from the mayor, who is slated to speak at a 5 p.m. news conference alongside Vogue's Lisa Love, L.A.-based designer Randolph Duke, skateboarder/reality TV star Rob Dyrdek and Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am.The Beverly Center has promised the first 100 shoppers a free Fashion's Night Out Los Angeles T-shirt — designed by FIDM student Marc Blaskovits. (The shirt will be sold at the mall and other participating spots around Los Angeles — including Fred Segal on Melrose, The Grove and Intermix and Udrest, which are both on Robertson, among others — for $15 each. Proceeds will help fund scholarships for fashion students.)A fashion show of fall looks featuring some of the Beverly Center's retailers (including Forever 21, Bebe, Ben Sherman and Traffic, among others) will be staged in the mall's sixth-floor central area at 5:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. In between, Macy's is scheduled to host a quot; Denim Rocksquot; runway show, highlighting local denim brands, at 6:30 p.m.
In addition Charles David founder Charles Malka is scheduled to do an in-store shoe signing (in the Beverly Center) from 6 to 9 p.m. William Rast co-founders Tracy Ayala and Justin Timberlake will be hosting a sneak peek at their label's new footwear collection and a special FNO eyewear collection at the William Rast flagship store at Westfield Century City from 8 to 9 p.m. (Earlier the pair will do the same at the Nordstrom at Santa Monica Place from 6 to 7 p.m.)Throughout the night, the Fred Segal Center on Melrose promises appearances by Quiksilver's surfing team, Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh (who will sign copies of his book quot; Beautiful Mutantsquot; ) and the guys behind Spirit Hoods, who will be on hand to make sure that any of their animal-shaped hats that are purchased are worn jauntily askew.Taylor Jacobson (formerly with quot; The Rachel Zoe Projectquot; ) will be on hand to offer styling tips from 8 to 10 p.m.Decadestwo and HauteLook are kicking off a three-day quot; 400 dresses for $400quot; event — with a cocktail party featuring special guest designer Alexis Phifer.
The last time Silvia Venturini Fendi, a creative director at her family's 83-year-old fashion dynasty, came to Los Angeles, the circumstances were rather extraordinary. Her parents had shipped her to the celebrity-filled oasis at 21, after she narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt in Rome. They installed her as a salesgirl in their Rodeo Drive store and gave her a red Mustang convertible. Over the course of three months, she fell for a boy from Brazil. quot; He's my big love,quot; Fendi told her mother before taking off with him to Rio de Janeiro, marrying him, and having two kids.
SEE LOOKBOOOK: FENDI'S L.A. DINNER
More than two decades, a second husband, another child, and about 1,000 variations of the Baguette bag later, Fendi returned to L.A. (from her hometown, Rome) in mid-February for a whirlwind trip. The conditions were far less dramatic, however. She came to celebrate the reopening of the recently redesigned Rodeo Drive boutique and the 10th anniversary of the Baguette. quot; It's like when you redo your house,quot; she explained. quot; Things evolve.quot;
To commemorate Fendi's long-awaited return to the city, Linda Evangelista, the only person ever to have a Fendi bag named after her, opened the Holmby Hills home she shares with Hard Rock Cafe founder and avid art collector Peter Morton for an intimate dinner. quot; Silvia is one of the most delightful, normal people I've met in this business,quot; said Evangelista, who was upset only that she didn't get to bid on 10 one-of-a-kind Baguettes, hand decorated by artists like Will Cotton, Rachel Feinstein, Jeff Koons, and Francesco Vezzoli, that were on display that evening in the store. (Proceeds benefited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.)
quot; Lauren Taschen outbid me on the Koons,quot; said cohost Maria Bell. quot; I went to $18,000!quot; New York social Fabiola Beracasa fiddled with her chartreuse lambskin micro Baguette. quot; This afternoon, [Fendi CEO] Michael Burke told me that to raise the logo, they inject it with silicone,quot; Beracasa said. quot; I told him, 'God, that's so L.A.'quot;
Evangelista surprised Amber Valletta with a birthday cake. quot; She's one of my best friends, but I don't know how old she is,quot; she confessed. Then again, Evangelista recently told a makeup artist she was 41, only to call later to say she was 42. quot; I forgot! But I didn't want her to think I was lying. I have to take ginkgo biloba, but then I forget that too.quot;
To put a perfect cap on the evening, LACMA director and CEO and husband of LVMH's Katherine Ross, Michael Govan, led Fendi and a few dinner guests on a private midnight tour of the new Broad Contemporary Art Museum. quot; I have to leave tomorrow,quot; Fendi said, somewhat bittersweetly. quot; But we have many reasons to return.quot;
NEWSSaks Fifth Avenue and ChrysalisInStyleCirculation 1,788,162Online
NEWSJimmy ChooStyle.comCirculation 660,724Online456120563500

860961top
NEWSSaks Fifth AvenueFashion Week DailyCirculation 31,095Online
2553970107315
0173990
(LOS ANGELES) “I am highly self-conscious and embarrassed,” said the normally un-gun-shy Angie Harmon in the press room of Wednesday's 20th-annual Colleagues spring luncheon at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Hosted by Saks Fifth Avenue, she and husband Jason Sehorn were about to be presented with the Champion of Children Award by Betsy Bloomingdale for their contributions to children's causes and youth issues in L.A. like the Alliance for Children’s Rights, the Stuart House, P.S. Arts and Kids Give. Sehorn also has his own foundation called Sehorn’s Corner, which aids single-parent families. quot; I am happy to say I have the same size waistline as Angie Harmon,quot; Bloomingdale professed.
The reason for Harmon's embarrassment? quot; My husband and I fly under the radar when it comes to our charitable commitments,quot; she explained. quot; I always think it's weird when celebrities have camera crews around when they're doing charity work. I could barely get up the nerve to tell my parents I was getting this award,quot; she admitted. quot; How do you tell your parents Nancy Reagan decided you were worthy of an award from her group? The woman is amazing.quot; Mrs. Reagan turned out in a white Chanel suit and posed for photos with Harmon and Sehorn, and stayed for the entire Oscar de la Renta fall fashion show in the ballroom after lunch.
Angie's proud dad Larry Harmon came in from Dallas for the event. quot; There are no words to describe my pride in her,quot; he gushed. quot; If I knew she would turn out this way, I would have had ten kids. And if I knew she'd marry someone as great as Jason, I would have had twenty!quot;
Where a great charity goes, great fashion follows. Harmon wore a brown, black and white print Oscar dress finished off with taupe Jimmy Choos. quot; The Oscar folks sent ten looks to my stylist, Tara Swennen,quot; said Harmon. quot; And I chose this one. I'm a sucker for a full skirt, and I love this print.quot;
Also wearing Oscar was young actress Kate Mara, in a white dress with cream embellishment. quot; I didn't know anything about this group of women,quot; she admitted. quot; I just wanted to see Oscar's fall show.quot; The Colleagues do include some of L.A.'s most charitable and pre-eminent ladies: Barbara Davis, Nancy Davis, Lianne Weintraub, Lisa Rinna, and Garcelle Beauvais. Also in the crowd were Julia Moran, Ever Carradine, Colleen Bell, Jenny Belushi, Susan Casden, Carla Sands and Shannon Rotenberg. Susan Casden, in vintage de la Renta, was busy taking collection notes. “It’s never too early to think about next season!quot; she said.
