Doug starts here…..The Carboline Company was founded in 1947 by Stanley Lopata, a chemical engineer. When a friend described a corrosion problem in a process vessel, Mr. Lopata proceeded to invent an organic, liquid applied lining to solve the problem. It was a Carbon based lining material, hence the name Carboline. Today at Carboline, we approach our business exactly the same way. We work with customers to help solve their problems. We have over 500 active products unitizing over 40 different coating technologies with new technologies on the way.We have not only grown organically and also through acquisitions that provide us access to new technologies, new market segments, or new geographic territories in the world.
Many of our products are aimed at providing protection from corrosive atmospheric conditions. Zinc primers, epoxies, alkyds, polyurethanes, acrylics, siloxanes, and fluoropolymers are all used to provide protection from atmospheric corrosive conditions caused by the sun, rain, salt water, and industrial vapors.
Internal linings are a very large part of our business. They provide a critical service whether the purpose is protect steel or concrete from the effects of chemical attack or to keep a cargo pure from contaminants. Phenoline products are designed to provide dependable performance in variety of common immersion exposures like fuel storage. For more challenging needs, our Plasite products provide the highest level of protection, proven by rigorous testing and extensive case histories. Other specialty products include Polyclad which are specifically developed for the internal and external protection of buried pipelines, and Reactamine products that provide protection in water and wastewater service.
Protecting steel surfaces from corrosion in high heat requires special technology. Our Thermaline products are designed to provide protection to steel process piping and vessels whether they are under insulation or exposed to the atmosphere.
Carbotherm products are designed to provide the properties of insulation in a liquid applied coating film. They are used to protect plant personnel from incidental contact with hot process piping or equipment. They can also be used to insulate tanks from the sun’s heating effect as well as eliminate condensation on cold surfaces.
Rustbond is one of our more unique products for the maintenance or recoating of equipment. It is designed to penetrate into the substrate and seal it. It can be used directly to tight adhering rust or as a sealing primer over old existing coating. Either way, it prepares the surface for a fresh application of a protective coating system.
Semstone products are engineered to provide protection to concrete in secondary containment service. Concrete berms and walls are often constructed around process vessels or tanks to contain any accidental spill. Semstone containment coatings are designed to be resistant to the spilled chemicals and protect the integrity of the concrete.
We provide protection to walls and floors with our Sanitile products. Sanitile products are designed to look good and protect.
Carboline is the only company that offers a complete line of fireproofing technologies. Steel will lose its strength when exposed to a fire allowing buildings and structures to collaspe. Fire proofing applied to the steel, delays this by providing insulation to the steel. This allows time for personnel to escape and emergency response personnel to react. There are two types of fireproofing: cementitious, a cement-like material and intumescent, a paint-like product that generates a protective char when it is exposed to a fire. Carboline manufactures both cementitious and intumescent type fireproofing products for both architectural and industrial applications. We are the only company that does.
