Based on “Not another day”, Slug (a famous US rapper) has mentioned in his song about one of the most important and imminent issues in society: “Live to work, to live, to work, to live. She is going to feed the kid and give it all she’s got to give. Plus she’s trying to catch a little overtime. If she stays till 4, she could be home by 5” (Not another day, 2008). Those lyrics told a story of a woman who worked hard for her family and she never had enough time for her children as for her own life; she always thought of getting the new way of living someday. By the meaning of “Not another day”, it emphasizes about the changing attitude to work expressed of people everywhere in nowadays (Slug, 2008). In the past, people lived to work under pressure and in a stressful environment; however, the new generations of society now are coming with new options of choosing the way to work. They work to live as working for what they love to be happy and their life becomes more meaningful. This essay discusses the causes of these changes in working life, followed by an analysis. Finally, this argument provides effects of those transformations in society, coming from the following statement: “I don’t live to work, I work to live”.

ESSAY
Based on “Not another day”, Slug (a famous US rapper) has mentioned in his song about one of the most important
and imminent issues in society: “Live to work, to live, to work, to live. She is going to feed the kid and give it all she’s

2008). Those lyrics told a story of a woman who worked hard for her family and she never had enough time for her
children as for her own life; she always thought of getting the new way of living someday. By the meaning of “Not
another day”, it emphasizes about the changing attitude to work expressed of people everywhere in nowadays (Slug,
2008). In the past, people lived to work under pressure and in a stressful environment; however, the new
generations of society now are coming with new options of choosing the way to work. They work to live as working

for what they love to be happy and their life becomes more meaningful. This essay discusses the causes of these
changes in working life, followed by an analysis. Finally, this argument provides effects of those transformations in
society, coming from the following statement: “I don’t live to work, I work to live”.
First of all, in the current economic, everyone can realize a big pressure over their shoulders on giving up the worklife balance for the sake of saving their job. Tracey Sestili, CEO at Beverly Fund Lung Cancer Foundation, argued that
there are the good and bad work-life balances in society (Divine Caroline, 2013). Basically, she explained that the
differences between those balances make the transformation from the worker’s thoughts to their working attitude
as indicated in the following statement: “I don’t live to work, I work to live”. In her article, Sestili (2013) emphasized a
fact that everyone now depends on working for their house, paying the fees, buying food and providing for their
family. Nonetheless, how much time they were working is how many times they could not spend and enjoy their life
to those whom they love. As she brought a question: “What good is all that money and all those lost hours with your
loved ones really worth?”, she wanted everyone to understand how important of having a good work-life balance. In
addition to this, Sestili analyzed that there are four main factors which contribute to a bad work-life balance what are
also the causes of changing people’s attitude in workplace.
The first factor is that people were working with and for whom they abominate. Working for someone they abhor
can be inopportune and inconvenient which also make them feel disconcerting and distressing. A big head partner,
troublesome teammate or a nonstop complainer and an outrageous colleague can negatively affect their
performance and working attitude. Instead of concentrating on the work people must do together, they may end up
reducing time and effectiveness; everyone is struggling to calm down and keep their emotions in quiet and
attempting to oversee their behaviors as well as the others’ (Goleman, D., 2012). The next point which causes the
changes of attitude is that the workers disregarded their company, they found themselves fearful of working in the
morning and impotent to take rest at the end of the week (Estrin, M., 2010). As Estrin (2010) states, it cannot be
denied that if everybody had a passion for their job, they would never seemingly call it work. To support this point,
Estrin implied that the successful and happy ones are those people who know how to get paid for doing what they

love in their companies; while the others, the rest of them, simply get paid so they can afford to do what they like on
the weekends (2010). Furthermore, those others always chew and repeat one wearisome and exhausted quote in
their head: “I hate to work. I abhor going to office. I abominate my chief.” (Doyle, A., 2013). Besides, the third cause
which cannot be ignored is that the workers often go to work with distasteful traffic which is almost a common
problem, inevitable for anyone. “This was before I encountered the hallways from hell. People form crowds, leaving
no room for an eager person like me to pass on by”, a report’ saying of a journalist (Cormier, K., 2012). Last but not
least, the most important reason changes the working attitude is that the company does not recognize and respect
their importance. In an ideal world, everyone would not be working in a job that clashed with their values, but it
happens in opposite way in real life. According to Sestili’s article, most of people could feel that their company did
not value their right value what makes them more stressful (Divine Caroline, 2013). In other words, workers imagined
of holding a ton of pressures over their shoulder.
Overall, as everything mentioned above, there are four main factors which is making reeling the balance between
work and life and bringing the changes of working attitude in society, coming from the following statement: “I don’t
live to work, I work to live”. Working for someone whom people hate or for a company where they despise, having
troubles in the traffic before office time and feeling an inaccurate evaluation for their dedication are more stressful
factors than anyone can imagine. The workers get so many pressure and almost time they think that they cannot
breathe for a minute because they are living to work, not to live. In reality, an extreme stress can produce a lot of
adrenalin which affects human’s blood circulation, leading to heart attacks and cause heart diseases seriously (Sestili,
2013). A long commute is another drawback and disadvantage to people’s life; even if they have kept calmed to
spiritually face with traffic-jam, accepted public transportation, and lowered their carbon footprint, they are still
losing their own precious time. With eight hours or more in car or on train, those times are tantamount to an extra
working day per week, but workers are only getting paid for five, not six (Slug, 2008). They are robbing time for
themselves and the people whom they are interacting with of their full attention. Time is extremely valuable thing
that people always waste it for what they see and think immediately but life can change in an instant. As the tragic

and memorable event on 9th November or the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake disaster, seems like everything changes
in one second, and sometimes people can be unable to do what they want, they care and they really love in
“tomorrow” anymore (Sestili, 2013). “So would not you want to reduce your stress level by working in a better place
or for a better boss?”, a question has been posed from Sestili (2013).
