Open heart surgery is any type of surgery where the chest is cut open and surgery is performed on the muscles, valves, or arteries of the heart. Coronary artery bypass surgery is the most common type of heart surgery.During this surgery, a healthy artery or vein is attached to a blocked coronary heart artery. This allows the grafted artery to “bypass” the blocked artery and bring fresh blood to the heart. Open heart surgery may be done to perform a CABG. A CABG may be necessary for patients with coronary heart disease. CHD occurs when blood vessels that provide blood and oxygen for the heart become narrow and hard. This is called Hardening of the arteries. To repair or replace heart valves To repair damaged or abnormal areas of heart To put medical devices required for proper functioning of internal organs Replace a damaged heart with well functioning heart A CABG is takes between 5-7 hrs. For this surgery: First, Anesthesia is given to the patient Surgeon makes 8-10 cuts in the chest Once the heart is visible, the patient may be connected to a heart-lung bypass machine. This machine moves blood away from the heart so that the surgeon can operate. The surgeon uses a healthy vein or artery to make a new path around the blocked artery. Once the procedure is completed the cut is stitched up. Valve repair can usually be done on congenital valve defects, defects you are born with. Procedures used for different Valve Repairs: Commissurotomy Valvuloplasty Reshaping Decalcification Repair Patching Severe valve damage means the valve must be replaced and most often involves the aortic or mitral valve. It is also used to treat any valve disease that is life-threatening. Some patients may need more than one valve repaired or replaced. Two different kinds of valves can be used: Mechanical valves Biological valves Minimally invasive heart valve surgery is a technique that uses smaller incisions to repair or replace heart valves. In this surgery there is less pain. This type of surgery cannot be done in following cases: Patient With severe valve damage If patient need more than one valve repaired or replaced Patient Who have clogged arteries Patients Who are obese Transcatheter aortic valve implantation is a minimally invasive procedure to repair a damaged or diseased aortic valve. A catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin and threaded to the heart. A balloon at the end of the catheter, with a replacement valve folded around it, delivers the new valve to take the place of the old.
