be less than 2 years of study. The major and supportive courses will be done by a
combination of limited contact with an appointed tutor for each topic and distance

The PhD programme consists of a number of phases, which you will have to go through
and meet the minimum requirements before progressing to the next phase.

PHASE 1: Completion of the preliminary courses of the MPhil Degree (January to June of
every calendar year)

One of the admission requirements is that you have to attend and pass the following courses
from the MPhil in Entrepreneurship:

      ENP 821 Introduction to Entrepreneurship
      ENP 822 Entrepreneurship Theory
      ENP 823 Creativity and Innovation
ENP 824 Small Business Enabling Environment
      NME 804 Research Methodology

NB: For Phase 1 you enrol for Economic Management Sciences Post Graduate Special. You
only enrol for PhD and continue with Phase 2 once you have met the minimum
      requirements.
3

PHASE 2: Preparation of research proposal for empirical research on a topic
(Timeframe: 1-6 months)

A written research proposal must be prepared. A doctoral thesis requires exceptional work,
which means it must be a new contribution to the literature in entrepreneurship. The use of
descriptive and inferential techniques is required for this study.

The research proposal will be done under the guidance of a study leader who will be appointed
by the programme leader. The proposal and research methodology must be presented to a
panel of academics. You will be expected to defend the proposal.

PHASE 3: The selection and completion of two major courses and two supportive
courses (Timeframe: 6-12 months)

Once your research proposal has been approved/accepted, you must select the two major and
two supplementary courses in conjunction with your study leader.

These courses should preferably be closely related to the title and content of your thesis. You
will be appointed a lecturer for each course who will act as a study leader for the content and
specific evaluation of progress.

You will prepare essays on these subjects, which you must present at a colloquium at the end
of a semester. After the presentation, you will be examined on the topics by a panel of internal
and external examiners. This phase is also used to a great extent to complete the literature
study and the thesis.

PHASE 4: Commence with your empirical research and finalisation of your thesis (6-12
months)

The literature study must be completed and the research design must be developed in
conjunction with your study leader. Personnel of the Department of Statistics and Information
Technology will assist with data capturing, processing, and statistical analysis.

The thesis is only submitted for examination when the study leader is satisfied that it is of such
a standard and that it will pass examination.

Two external and one internal examiner must award a pass mark for the thesis. This normally
happens within six weeks from submission. With submission on or before 31 May, you will
qualify you for the September graduation and submission on 31 October you will qualify for the
following graduation in March/April.

You will prepare essays on these subjects, which you must present at a colloquium at the end of a semester. After the presentation, you will be examined on the topics by a panel of internal and external examiners. This phase is also used to a great extent to complete the literature study and the thesis. PHASE 4: Commence with your empirical research and finalisation of your thesis (6-12 months) The literature study must be completed and the research design must be developed in conjunction with your study leader. The thesis is only submitted for examination when the study leader is satisfied that it is of such a standard and that it will pass examination. Two external and one internal examiner must award a pass mark for the thesis. This normally happens within six weeks from submission.
