Before I begin, let me tell you a little bit about myself STARWARS COOKIES WISE BEYOND MY YEARS… AGED 20
OK, I’m a numbers guy so these statistics really stuck out of me I’M A STATSTICS GUY SO I GOT THESE FACTS FROM THE NBTF WEBSITE
I PICTURE GUY EVEN MORE. DIFFERENT TYPES OF BRAIN TUMORS
THE TYPE OF TUMOR I HAD WAS LAST FACT MAY BE SKEWD.
The age of these celebrities are what really stuck out to me. There were more listed but these people were names I recognized. All these people were relatively young, but I discovered some stat that were shocking to me
I am nearing the tail end of my young adulthood. There is very little research being done on young adult patients, but organizations like: I’m too young for this, Planet Cancer, LiveStrong Young Adult Alliance Ulman Fund They are a few groups doing great work to increase awareness and support for Adolescent and young adult patients. Like I mentioned earlier being a young adult is tough enough… adding cancer or some other devastating DX makes things a whole lot more complicated
In US News and World report They discuss why there has been little progress in the survival rates of YA Lack of participation in Clinical trials Lack of research Too young for geriatric research, but too old for pediatric studies Don’t know about clinical trials. Benefits are not good due to entry level jobs. The last reason is what I call the “Superman” complex – We think we are invincible and nothing can happen to us. When something does, sometimes it’s too late.
Keeps track of your progress by being measurable Ex. “I wanna walk to that trash can in 10 minutes” Ex. “I wanna paddle the length of pool on the short board without stopping Focuses your attention on something Be prepared . Do your homework Knowledge is power! Knowing is half the battle!
Being a young adult is hard enough… Trying to: Start a career find a spouse start a family Find an affordable place to live Establishing your independence All while trying to enjoy yourself A unexpected health issue pops up and priorities immediately change. I’ve always been an independent guy, but my situation opened up my eyes to a lot of issues. Luckily my cognition was not effected from the surgery. I was left obviously with physical impairments, but I am still making improvements. It’s just taking much longer than anyone expected
I am here today because I wrote a book. This book is unique because:
Adolescents and young adults are a patient population that is often over looked in favor of the cute pediatric population, the established adult population, and the wise geriatric population I have a very short attention span kid who entertained myself So I needed something to do!
