1. Q4) who would be the audience for your media product?
As my magazine is based on the genre of electronic and house music, I will
carefully choose a specific audience which I think will be interested in reading
the magazine. I will consider thinking about a couple of factors, including:
What their favourite bands and artists are
What their interests are including hobbies
The age range
Their social class (demographics)
Their occupation
How much they are earning
Gender
Their psychographics
Niche markets and social groups
Gender representation in the music press
My target audience will particularly be aimed towards men/boys. This is
because most listeners of electronic and house music are boys and men. This
is also relevant to the gender representation in the music press. It is found
that men take up most of the readership for the overall audience of music
magazines; this is very stereotypical to think of it in this way. The more
controversial and deep a magazine gets, it looks to be aimed at men. There
are hardly any music magazines that I could think of that an audience will
instantly know that it is targeted towards women; apart from top of the pops as
it uses more bright and feminine colours. Most popular magazines such as
NME and Kerrang would entice more male readers even though it is originally
aimed towards both genders because of its controversial appeal. This is
relevant to the target audience of my magazine and why I have chosen it to
be aimed towards men and boys rather than female readers. This is because I
want my magazine to be more formal with the use of more secondary colours
such as red and blues.
There would be a significant age range for my magazine as it will not be
suitable for all ages. It will not be suitable for all ages because my magazine
will include formal content which younger readers might not appreciate. I have
decided for the age range of my magazine to be between 17-25 as I believe
this particular age range is most suitable for the demand of my magazine. It is
most suitable for my magazine because young adults are more likely to be
more outgoing and sociable. The magazine will be able to provide them with
more topics to talk about with peers to gain a more individual and unique
status. They are able to achieve this because as the readership of overall
music magazines have decreased, my magazine will be able to change that
as the content will get readers eager to share the information with friends as
reading the magazine will allow them to be the first to know about certain
aspects to do with the electronic and house music genre. This age range will
also be able to afford money as even though most will consist of students,
they are likely to have part time jobs which they will use the payment to buy
little necessities and pleasures like my magazine.
2. For my target audience’s demographics, their social class will be B-C2 as
middle class are more likely to afford the magazine. Seeing as most of my
readers will be students, as I said before, they are likely to have part-time jobs
so they are still able to earn and purchase the magazine. I have chosen for
that specific sub group to be my particular audience because they my
magazine will be sold for a reasonable amount which will meet the standards
of my audience which will make sure they are able to afford the magazine.
For my target audience, I will also have to consider their psychodynamics.
Psychodynamics is the way people look at themselves and what kind of
lifestyle they would like to lead. My audience should right now be
mainstreamers but would like to achieve and become an individual and
succeeded in the future. This foreshadows their lifestyles as a current student,
as they would right now be sociable and outgoing with friends, where they
would all want to follow similar trends and listen to the same music. Although
those wanting to achieve an individual status in the future would make them
appear to be unique and adventurous. This type of persona fits in perfectly
with the genre of electronic and house music as it is lively and very out there.
A typical person in my target audience would belong to a social group that are
again, very outgoing and sociable. The social group of people who like going
to parties, raves and gigs will be a suitable as my audience as the genre of
music my magazine provides, are always played in those significant places of
interest for my readers. This social group would be particularly be made up of
rebels and egoists. This will be my niche market because they will all share
similar interests, income and needs.
I have chosen an audience that have a very active lifestyle and are dedicated
to music and have a few interesting hobbies such as taking up a sport and
socialising with friends. I have chosen for them to be active with their social
life so that they can purchase the magazine and share its content with peers.
My target audience should like the specific genre of electronic and house
music as that is what my magazine is based on. To identify this, they would
most likely be fans of artists and bands from that specific genre such as:
disclosure, scouting for girls, MGMT and chase and status.
