2. YOF/YCF application form guidance notes.
It is hoped that the following ‘cheat sheet’ will help you to understand the process of applying to us for
money and the importance of good preparation and clear evidence of your needs.
Golden Rule 1: The Youth Opportunity Fund (YOF) and the Youth Capital Fund (YCF) are pots of
money especially for Young People in Devon between the ages of 13 - 19. The completed YOF and
YCF applications are looked at by the YouthBanks (a panel of Young People) who make decisions
about how worthwhile these projects are. Young People must be at the heart of all these projects,
ideas and decisions regarding the money - the more you can evidence this the better. Of course
support from an adult is possible and available from your local Area Youth Worker, if you need it.
Golden Rule 2: We will only support applications for staffing costs if the Youth Worker being paid is
suitably qualified. This means working with JNC guidelines or equivalent - please contact us if you
need this explained (workshop trainers will only be considered if we are provided with details of their
work and qualifications).
Golden Rule 3: We very rarely offer funding to the following: individuals (and we only consider
individuals at all if they are directly benefiting their community), overseas trips, repeat funding for the
same project (we can give money to the same group again but it needs to be for a different project).
Golden Rule 4: Any funding received from Devon YouthBanks will be monitored. For example,
requests for money for pieces of equipment will be expected to be used for that exact purpose and
receipts will need to be provided. Likewise any money requested for staffing, running costs etc would
also need to be accounted for through appropriate financial records which will need to be produced
upon request. See below for more details.
Monitoring requirements:
As part of the monitoring process you will be required to:
• Provide evidence of the money that has been spent (copies of invoices, receipts, we may
visit to see the equipment first hand also).
• Spend the money on the items stated in your application form (if you under-spend then you
must contact your local YouthBank who sent you the money seeking permission to spend on
other items or return the money).
• Provide a report, written or otherwise, compiled by the young people applying or benefiting
from our funding.
• Provide a final, accurate, breakdown of young people who have benefited from the funding
(number of males and females in each of age ranges between 13 and 19; the number of
those who have identified with being disadvantaged and/or disabled).

and where you meet. What sort of
organisation are you part of? (e.g.

4. This is the really important bit. Please explain thoroughly and in detail:
WHAT DO YOU
WANT TO DO?
How many young people
do you think will benefit
from the project and why?
Will anyone else in your
area get something out of
this project? It would be
brilliant if other people
thought this was a good
idea, even if they aren’t
young people. You can
tell us what they think WHO WILL IT HELP
here. AND WHY?
4
5. Can you explain to us WHY DO YOU
how you decided on WANT TO DO IT?
the idea for your
project? Why do you
think the project is
needed? Did you do
any research or have
you asked other young
people about it?
Is there anything else
you want us to know?
The biggest problem we
find is that we never get
enough information
about the groups that
apply for money and
sometimes this delays
the application. Unless
you sell yourself and tell
us all about your idea
you might not get
funding.
If there isn't enough room here then staple another sheet of paper to this part.

6. Certificates of achievement
Will any young
person involved in
this project gain
some kind of
award or
achievement, like

detail.

11. These are some of the things we have given money for:
BUDDLE BUDDIES
This is a scheme where young
people at a youth club volunteer to
become mentors for new young
people joining their club. They
show them around, tell them
everyone’s names and make sure
they are involved. Everyone knows
who they are by their smart new T-
shirts that the YOF paid
for! Numbers at the youth club
have grown and grown now
everyone feels welcome.
Tavistock Gospel Choir
This is a group of young people who love
to sing. The YOF provided money for a
teacher for their rehearsals and now they
perform all over their local area and even
in Exeter Cathedral.
1st Chagford and Drewsteignton Scouts
Scouts without tents or cooking stoves! We couldn’t
have that so the YOF gave them some money and
now they are out and about all over the place learning
new skills, eating healthily, keeping fit and well and
having fun. Their confidence is growing all the time!
Newton and Noss Adventurers
Young people in the small rural parish of
Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo wanted
something exciting to do. They launched their
Adventure Club with an abseil from their 80ft
church tower. This is one of their quieter
evening meetings where they are practising
their circus skills. They have also been
camping, surfing and high roping. Now they
know everyone in the village, have lots of fun
on their doorstep and learn loads of new stuff.
