Sir Martin Narey has agreed to expand his role as the government's adoption advisor to advise more generally on children's social care given the vulnerability of children in care. His experience will help make progress in improving children's social care. As a first step, the Secretary of State has asked Sir Martin to review the quality of education and training for child and family social workers as part of ongoing reform of social work.

Given the vulnerability of children in care to these and other kinds
of dangers, it’s crucial that we do all we can to keep them safe
which is why I’m delighted that Sir Martin Narey, the
government's adoption advisor has agreed to expand his role and
will advise us more generally on children’s social care. His
experience and expertise will, I’m sure, make a significant
contribution to progress in this area. As a first step, the Secretary
of State has asked Sir Martin to look at the quality of education
and training for child and family social workers as part of the on-
going reform of social work. Today we have also advertised the
Chief Social Worker posts; they will play a pivotal role in driving
up quality and the status of the workforce.
