Porn may be Pied Piper's Hail Mary pass in latest episode of 'Silicon Valley'

'Silicon Valley'
'Silicon Valley' Season 2, episode 7: 'Failure = Success'
Pied Piper is turning to porn.
After getting "brain-raped" by Endframe earlier this season, Richard decides to fight fire with fire by
trying to poach his competitor's $15-million deal with pornography company Intersite. The guys
uncover details of this deal when Gilfoyle reveals he found the password to Endframe's system on a
Post-it note. So Richard, despite some initial reluctance, convinces Intersite CEO Molly Kendall
(Romy Rosemont) to let Pied Piper compete for its business.

As Gilfoyle aptly puts it, Richard is going down a "left-hand path." And while he's no Michael
Corleone -- at least not yet -- his slow transformation from nervous pushover to bourgeoning
powerhouse is a welcome change of pace. Getting screwed over has helped Richard channel his
newfound assertiveness against Enframe, Hooli CEO Gavin Belson and in this episode, Russ
Hanneman.
Oh, Russ.
After losing his billionaire status over a series of bad business decisions, Pied Piper's latest funder
retracts his previous advice, and tells Richard to switch the company to a sales-based model. Russ
wants them to start making money -- so much so that he proposes Pied Piper merge with Endframe.
But Richard refuses to work with "clowns" who unapologetically stole his algorithm, and then took it
to market first (notable examples of this "first-mover advantage" include Amazon and eBay).
Naturally, Russ becomes irate, and threatens to pull Pied Piper's funding despite their contract.
That's why a potential deal with Intersite could solve everything ("We could settle out with Russ,
paralegal fees, have plenty of runway to get us to CES," Jared says). It also opens up tons of comedic
opportunities for Silicon Valley. In fact, "Adult Content" already took advantage of the show's porn
narrative in one notable scene; it featured CEO Molly Kendall speaking on stage alongside moving
2. dildos, as serious business reps from companies called "Poop on my Wife" and "Brutalized Assholes"
watch with rapt attention.
(It's also worth nothing that with Molly, Silicon Valley is introducing yet another compelling female
character to the mix, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.)

Meanwhile, Pied Piper's conflict with Hooli stayed mostly on the back burner this episode, focusing
instead on Gavin Belson's attempts at damage control. Following the company's failure to live
stream a UFC fight in 4K resolution, Belson turns to HooliXYZ for a "function so game-changing that
its integration into Nucleus will justify any miscue in the platform's rollout." And surprisingly, Big
Head's team does have a groundbreaking idea -- but unfortunately, the feature won't be ready
anytime soon.
It looks like Pied Piper isn't the only company that needs a Hail Mary pass.
