Yahoo! Answers is a free community where members can ask questions and receive answers on any topic. Members can earn points through different activities, such as giving and voting for an answer, or logging in. Points can be used for asking questions.
The non-profit educational site Khan Academy has been very popular with students for many reasons. Founder Salman Khan has been at the core of the program with his videos explaining math, physics, chemistry, art, and economics. The fact that the subjects are taught through videos allows learners to process materials at the speed that they want and seems to correspond to a more personal learning experience.

Quora is a knowledge community that puts some limitations on the way questions are asked and answered. First, questions can be edited by other members to make them clearer or more precise. Second, a member can give only one answer to a question, although this answer can be continually edited and improved.
The scientific community ResearchGate evaluates the work and impact of scientists according to the number of publications, citations, downloads, and views. ResearchGate then calculates an RG Score, which is a metric that measures scientific reputation based on how all of a scientist’s research is received by peers.

Professional communities are a good example of how gamification can significantly increase user participation and engagement. The SAP Community Network (SCN) has been using game design elements since 2006. Stack Overflow is one of the many communities on the Stack Exchange Network. On this website programmers help each other by asking and answering questions. Stack Overflow’s reputation system is one of the most elaborate, with many different layers. Lifetime achievements, most recent contributions, responses to questions, badges earned, among other categories, provide a sophisticated basis for understanding a user’s skill level. On the micro-lending platform Kiva members can lend small amounts of money to individuals and groups across the world. The borrowers often have no access to other form of financing for their projects. Borrowers state the amount required, describe their projects, and their background.
The clothing retailer ModCloth uses an interesting concept to decide whether a new fashion item shall be added to the product line. New designs are uploaded and then members can comment and vote in the “Be the Buyer“ section. Banana and produce distributor Chiquita was a sponsor of the animated movie Rio in 2011. To engage the audience with the movie and the brand, Chiquita offered interactive games and sweepstakes. With the help of gamification platform Bunchball, players could earn badges for different activities. To earn the sweepstakes the community as a whole had to reach a certain level of badges. This encouraged the players to invite friends to participate.

Pinterest is a photo sharing and collecting community. Users can pin pictures to their virtual boards and share it with their friends. Other members can like, comment, and re-pin the images. Members can also follow boards and receive new pictures displayed in their streams.
