Laboratory Practicum
Laboratory Preparation
Welcome to the Nursing Process 2 Lab and Simulation. The Skills Lab is where you will be introduced to new skills, be
expected to practice, and be evaluated on your skills. Mannequins, models and other equipment provide a non-
threatening, hands-on learning environment for skill acquisition.
As you travel through your nursing program, you will continue to spend time in the Nursing Skills Lab during each
course, whether you are learning new skills, reviewing previously learned skills, or being evaluated on your skills. You
all have your own style and pace of learning; therefore plan your time and needs accordingly. Practice is completed on
your own time. How much time you dedicate to practice is dictated by how quickly you learn and by the difficulty level
of the skills
The goal of the nursing skills lab is to provide an opportunity for you to become competent with your nursing skills and
thereby becoming a safe practitioner while working towards excellence in nursing. Your instructor will introduce you
to the new skill it is your responsibility to continue to practice on your own time to become proficient on the skill
Laboratory preparation is mandatory before coming for any lab practicum. Such preparation should
include:- reading the text material, viewing video tapes, listening to audiotapes and practicing new
procedures in preparation for test out. Students will be divided into study group. Students are to obtain their own
ran partner within the group to facilitate hand-on practice. It is the responsibility of each group to contact laboratory
coordinator to schedule a practice session in the laboratory. Laboratory attendance is mandatory but, in the
event of an emergency which may require an absence, any missed laboratory practice must be re-scheduled with the
instructor and made up within one week.
Students are to report to the nursing lab on the assigned day promptly at their designated lab time. Students are
expected to have read the assigned readings and be prepared for lab experience.
Procedure checklists for these skills will be posted on the web site. Students are expected to spend time in the school
lab in addition to scheduled lab hours. It is the students' responsibility to be ready for lab quizzes and test- outs.
No student should come to lab unprepared for the day's content.
Students must demonstrate their ability to perform Lab Skills prior to entering the clinical area. Students who fail a
skill test on the first attempt will be referred for remediation and schedule second chance. Failure on the second
attempt will result in a failure and such student will be dropped from clinical rotation. As a result, the student will be
required to drop the entire course. It is the responsibility of student to set up a time with the lab coordinator and
provide a lab partner as needed for lab practice.
