Roman Baths and Georgian Architecture in Bath

2. Bath dates about when Celts inhabited the area. Later, in AD43, The Romans established a city called Aquae Sulis. They built a hot bath and a temple to Minerva (goddess of wisdom) The temperature of the water reached to 49ºC!
4. It was in the 17th and 18th century when Bath grew to the city we know today. Queen Anne came to “take the waters” and high society followed her. Satisfied, they decided to live here. Beau Nash, a master of ceremonies, was the person who coordinated the architectural and social developments of the city. Thanks to him Bath saw a Second Golden Age.
6. Bath has now some of the most complete examples of Georgian 18th century domestic architecture in Europe.
7. The Roman Baths Main Attractions These baths are the best preserved Roman remains of their type in Britain. The bases of the columns are intact and the main pipe stills carries water from one of the city’s four hot springs.
9. Bath Abbey In 1499 Oliver King, Bishop of Bath, had a dream in which he saw angels ascending and descending from the Holy Trinity. Oliver thought it was a message to built an Abbey in his town. And here it is:

11. Pultney Bridge In 1769 William Pultney commissioned the famous architect Robert Adam to design this bridge. Its purpose was to link Bath’s centre with his wife’s house. There are only 3 types of bridges like this in the world: Ponte Rialto, Venice; Ponte Vecchio, Florence; and Pultney Bridge, Bath
15. Queen Square Like Bath Abbey, this square was inspired by a dream. John Wood the Elder saw visions of a new Rome in Bath The obelisk in the centre commemorates the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1738.

17. The Circus This was the first perfectly circular space in the history of Britain town planning. It is inspired by the Coliseum in Rome.

19. The Royal Crescent Designed by John Wood the Younger, the crescent is a semi-elliptical terrace of 30 magnificent houses. Number 1 is actually a museum.
