INTRODUCTION
Naughty student is a form of student behavior that
deviates from the rules of the school such as is truant.
Truancy called youth delinquency because it is already a
truant behaviors reflecting violated school rules.
The word "truant" is very popular in primary school
students until high school students.
Truancy is a response to boredom that are often
experienced by many students to the school curriculum.
Not only in big cities have seen students who are
truant, even schools are located in the villages truant
behavior has become a hobby.
Truancy, or unexcused absence from school, that
because no apparent reason, not because of illness or
other reasons.
Truancy has been linked to serious delinquent activity
in youth and to significant negative behavior and
characteristics in adults.
This problem needs serious handling. Because, this
problem will be bad, both for the students themselves
and to the school environment.
What is Truancy ?
How they do the truancy ?
The students usually went from home in the
morning with a uniform, but they were not in
school.
Many reasons that make they skipped from school. Truancy fall
into three broad categories, there are :
Why They Skipped (Truant) From School?
1. Family Factors
These includes : financial, social, medical, or other programs
that pressure students to stay home to help with family, Child
abuse and neglect, Family disorganization, Teen pregnancy or
parenthood, Lack of family support for educational and other
goals, Violence in or near the home or school, Differing culturally
based attitudes toward education.
2. School Factors
These includes: school climate such as school size and
attitudes of teachers or other students, and administrators—and
inflexibility in meeting the diverse cultural and learning styles of
the students. Schools often have inconsistent procedures for
dealing with chronic absenteeism and may not have meaningful
consequences available for truant youth.
3. Student Factors
These includes: a lack of personal and educational
ambition, Poor academic performance, Low school
attachment, Retention/overage for grade, Poor relationships
with other students, Lack of self-esteem, Unmet mental health
needs, Alcohol and drug use and abuse.
Consequences of Truancy
• Dropping out of school. Students who are chronically truant
typically fall behind in grade level and drop out of school.
• Delinquency. Students who are chronically truant are also at-risk
for other behaviors, such as alcohol and drug abuse, teenage
pregnancy, and delinquency.
• Negative effect upon other students. Students who are chronically
truant require extra time from teachers; teachers have less time to
spend with the regularly-attending students in the classroom when
they must create make-up work for truants.
THE ACTIONS THAT CAN DO TO REDUCE TRUANCY
There are many actions for reduce truant habit in students such as:
0 Discuss any attendance
problems. And then Giving an
advise for the child.
0 Teachers are always
creative, innovate to create a
cheerful atmosphere of the
class is fun and lively.
0 Giving responsibility both in
class and in school, which can
raise self-esteem and the trust.
For example, by following the
organization of the school as a
caretaker classes, etc.
0 Engaging all students in the
learning process. So the lesson
presented is not boring, such as
hold a quizzes, games, conduct
research, etc.
0 And many many more .
For example : A high school in California, USA, Anaheim
Union High School District, to implement a new way to overcome
the problem of students who like to truant habits. Instead of
punishment, students who skipped their school fact that even
given the 'gift' of a GPS mobile. Certainly is not a gift in the truest
sense. The device is basically a punishment, but is considered
more educated than the physical or mental punishment directly.
Any student caught truant at least four times a year will be
equipped with that device. They must report automatically with
the menu on the device five times a day, which is now going to
school, when they arrive at school, at lunch, at school, and every
day at 20.00.
Conclusion
Truancy in fact do by students who can not be responsible for
themselves and not be able to respect themselves.
However, they can not be separated from the factors that cause
students to truant from school, such as family factors, school
factors, factors from students themselves.
And all actions of truant habits be result :
0 Dropping out of school.
0 Students are also at-risk for other behaviors, such as alcohol and
drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, and delinquency.
0 Negative effect upon other students. .
For problem solving it required special attention both from
their family and their school.
Sugesstion
We recommend that students who are truant give
punishments or advice. But, hard punishments are not
always able to problem solving. But it would be nice if
the approach taken by the student like a friend. If that
way does not work, then steps must be taken is to
contact parents of students to be solve the problem
well. The support to repent from family, friends or
friendship is the most important.
The End
