2. City of bridges
• Stockholm was founded in 1252 and became the capital
in 1436.
• Stockholm is situated on an important trade route.
– Trade between the inland lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea.
– Trade from the north to the south.
• ”Gamla Stan” was a natural passage for the trade and
became the founding point.
• ”Stock” means ”log” and ”holm” means ”island”.
• Today the municipality of Stockholm has a population of
900.000 and the metropolitan area about 1.400.000.
• Because of its’ geography, Stockholm’s different
neighbourhoods are quite different in their
characteristics.
4. Södermalm (”South Island”)
• Used to be a poorer part of Stockholm.
• Partly farmland into the 20th century
• Nowadays a ”hip” part of town with a lot of media celebrities, alternative
and youth culture
• Rich night life and many small shops and restaurants
5. Östermalm (”East Island”)
• Became integrated in the city during the mid 19th century
• Exclusive part of town with expensive apartments, restaurants and
shops.
• Many tourist sights, such as Djurgården, The Royal Theatre and The
Museum of History
6. Norrmalm (”North Island”)
• Was almost completely destroyed and rebuilt during the 1950s –
1970s during a modernization process.
• Modern architecture and a lot of office buildings.
• The Central Station and the City Centre are located here.
• Big apartment stores and ”tourist traps” dominate commerce.
7. Kungsholmen (”King’s Island”)
• Basically farmland and forest until the 18th century
• Not completely urbanized until the beginning of the 20th century
• Many parks and small shops.
• The City Hall is the main attraction, as well as the long and beautiful
water front.
