2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION - ISAHP
The direct expansion
integrated solar assisted
heat pump (ISAHP) water
heater consists of a Rankine
refrigeration cycle where
unglazed flat plate solar
collectors act as an
evaporator for the refrigerant
(R600a).
The condenser is coupled
with a water storage tank in
order to cover the energy
user demand.

5. FLUID – R600a
A full design has been performed and R600a
resulted the best operating fluid.
The use of natural refrigerants, such as R600a – isobutane, is interesting for its low
environmental impact (ODP = 0, low GWP) when used in a high efficiency system
(low energy consumption, low TEWI) .
The range of pressure and Temperature of R600a fits the working condition of R134a
systems.
The use of R600a is consistent for small and medium device because of the
explosive hazard for bigger devices.
CE 1272/2008: Isobutane - Category 1 - H220 (High flammability)
Lower Explosion limit (LEL) 1.5 % Approx 38 g/m3
Upper Explosion Limit (UEL) 8.5% Approx 203 g/m3
Minimum ignition temperature 460 °C

7. ISAHP - PROTOTYPE
The prototype built at DIME – University of
Genoa is composed of:
• Variable speed volumetric compressor (6 cm3)
• Pulse modulated electronic expansion valve
• Water condenser
• Bare steel solar panel (evaporator) (1m2)
The solar evaporator is made of a copper coil
(din=8mm, dext=10mm, L=30m, A=0.75m2)
welded on an steel plate in which the R600a
flows.

8. ISAHP – PST comparison
The PSIPC system has been installed coupled with a traditional solar thermal
system (PST) in order to cover the hot water and heating load of a dressing room.
This design solution allow to compare the instant power and the thermal energy
generation of the two devices.

12. CONCLUSION - ADVANTAGES
Main advantages in comparison to traditional
system:
• The PSIPC prototype has been realized
using R134a components but charged with
R600a as refrigerant fluid. Good
adaptability has been found.
• Higher solar panel efficiency (0.7-0.9 );
→ the solar panel is kept at lower
working temperature
• Higher heat pump COP (6 ÷ 8.5);
→ higher evaporator working temperature
• Lower solar panel cost
→ bare steel plate, no glass cover
