2. Refrigerated Trucks
Refrigerated transport is an essential link in the cold chain. It aims
to supply the consumer with safe and high-quality perishable goods.
Global road freight transport is expected to grow 2,5% per year until
2030. Temperature-controlled pharmaceutical freight is expected to
grow more than 20% per year. Needs for food will also dramatically
increase in developing countries, which have to build a real cold chain
(cf my introduction)
We need to reduce the vehicle’s energy consumption and to handle the
refrigerants issue, especially in Europe.

3. Intermodal transport
Vehicle motors
Road congestion: transport sharing, night delivery…
Training of truck drivers
Dimensions of the bodies
Insulation: improving the thermal conductivity of materials (composite
structures… )
Thermal losses: opening and closing of doors, joints…
Multi-temperature equipment: it already represents about 1/3rd
of
new equipment in France for instance
Aerodynamics
Colour
The refrigerating system

Reducing the Energy Consumption
4. Refrigerant Issues
The vast majority of refrigerated vehicles currently use HFCs with
high Global Warming Potentials (GWP) as refrigerants. The leakage
rate in refrigerated transport could be as high as 25%/annum.
Even if the global consumption of HFCs in refrigerated vehicles is limited
(about 2% according to UNEP), there will be measures to reduce it,
particularly in Europe, with the future extension of the F-gas Regulation
in this sector.

5. Solutions (apart from better control):
Reducing the refrigerant charge
Using lower GWP HFCs
Using natural refrigerants: CO2, NH3, Hydrocarbons
Alternative production systems: cryogenic systems, sorption systems,
hybrid systems, Phase-Change Materials (PCMs)…
Moving to other systems with less or no high GWP refrigerant
emissions will be done later than in other sectors. Solutions are
similar, but must be adapted; they are more or less promising than in
other sectors.
For instance, more than 1000 vehicles equipped with cryogenic systems
are already in service in Germany and France (2009), particularly
because of different constraints (noise in urban areas…)

6. Each application is different:
Refrigeration road transport
Mobile Air Conditioning,
...
and thus solutions must be adapted.

CONCLUSION
However, in any case, we need to reduce in all these sectors the energy
consumption as well as the use of high-GWP HFCs: we need a gradual
phase-down.
We still need research and development and permanent updated
information: the constraints and thus the innovations will increase fast
especially in Europe.
