2. Culminating Activity
● Your culminating activity is worth 20% of your
final mark.
● There are two parts to your culminating activity:
1) Research an artist and produce a written
report including key information.
2) Using one of the materials we studied,
create an original artwork that imitates the
artist's style.

● You must choose an artist from the list
provided. If you know of an artist that is not on
the list, you must get permission to use
him/her for the project.
● Each student must choose a different artist.
● You will write a 2 - 3 page report (typed,
double spaced) including key information
about the artist.

KEY INFORMATION ABOUT THE ARTIST:
1) Where did/does the artist live most of his/her life? When did
the artist live?
2) State the artist's level of education (did he/she finish high
school, college, university, an apprenticeship?)
3) Explain how the artist made/makes his/her living. (How
did/does he/she make money?)

4) What materials did/does the artist use? Did/does he/she make
drawings, paintings, graphic design, ......?
5) What subject matter did/does the artist focus on?
6) Describe the artist's style. What elements of design did/does
he/she often use?

THE ARTIST'S WORK:
7) Critique one of the artist's pieces. Your report should include a
picture of it. Your critique should answer the following questions:
a) Describe how the artist uses 3 elements of design.
(examples – colour, line, and shape)
b) Which principle of design is the most obvious in this artwork?
Explain.
c) Explain why you like/dislike this artwork. Give at least 3
specific reasons for your opinion.

8) You must include a list of your sources on a
separate page at the end of your report. Failure
to do so will result in a ZERO for plagiarism.

Original Artwork Imitating Style
● You will create an original artwork that
imitates the style of the artist you chose.
● You may not copy any of the artist's pieces.
● You will use one of the materials we studied
during the semester:
pen & ink, pastels, clay, acrylic paint, linocuts
● Before beginning your artwork, you must
submit sketches and/or plans for approval.

Your artwork will be evaluated according to the following
categories:
● Creativity:
➔ Demonstrates brainstorming, practice, and planning.
➔ Unique, original design
➔ Incorporates components of the researched artist's style
● Technique:
➔ Demonstrates ability to control the material.
➔ Demonstrates a variety of techniques appropriate to the
material.
● Composition:
➔ Level of complexity
➔ Uses a variety of the elements & principles of design.

Your artwork will be evaluated according to the following
