2. Collaborative consumption
What is it?
– The term used to describe an economic model based on sharing, swapping,
bartering, trading or renting access to products as opposed to ownership.
– The idea itself is not new – ie. libraries, laundrettes etc.
Why is it important?
– New technology is making the concept possible on a scale never seen before.
– Good examples are marketplaces such as eBay, social lending (Zopa), peer-to-peer
travel (CouchSurfing, Airbnb) and car sharing (Zipcar or peer-to-peer RelayRides).
– It is reinventing not just what people consume, but how they consume it!
