1. Does lack of computer and internet access affect the education of the children in UK? Presentation by Abraham Bautista
2. Project Objectives To find out if the computers help the children in school. To compare the children who thinks computer and internet helps them to do their work from school and the children who thinks that the computer and internet can make them not interested in doing any work by just being tempted to go on social and gaming websites To find out why children don’t have access in home computers and internet. To suggest a strategy that can help children who wants to have access with computers.
3. Background Availability of computers and internet at: Home School Libraries Statistics 2m of children in the UK have no access in the internet Half of teachers who took a part in November for a survey for the Times Education Supplement said that students who have no access to the internet can diminish their learning capabilities.Survey also said that the household of poorer families are twice more likely to have no internet access in their homes than richer families.
4. Computer/Internet Access Facts The price of computers and subscription to internet are too expensive for family who doesn’t earn a lot. Children will earn less when they start working because they didn’t have access to computer and internet. Poor families are twice more likely to have no internet and computer access than richer families. Having no internet and computer access the children’s learning is affected badly due to lack of research for their work. 72% of Yr 10’s and 75% of Yr 11’s that I asked in my questionnaire positively said that computer and internet access will help them do their work.
5. Hypothesis The lack of home computer and internet access lowers the children’s the possibility of getting a good grade in school.
6. Criteria Children can’t afford the price of the computers as it is too expensive. The cost of internet connection cost too much for the poorer families. The children will have to spend money on travel to go to their local libraries. The school doesn’t have enough computers for everyone to use. The school often has some faulty computers so there will be a few who will be able to use a good condition computers. The longer it takes the less computer the children is available to use in school.
11. Main Findings 72-75% of students in Year 10 and 11 believes that computer and internet and computer access are vital to the improvement of their work in school and helpful for researching. 24-27% of students in Year 10 and 11 believes that computer and internet access can get away with their concentration as they will be tempted to go on social websites and gaming websites.
13. Lowest prices for computers and internet connections Based on the PC World the cheapest desktop pc with monitor you can get is worth £329.99 and for the laptop the cheaper you can get is £278.97. Based on www.uswitch.com the cheapest subscription for internet connection is TalkTalk broadband with only £3.25 a month for 12 months.
14.
15. The lack of home computer and internet access lowers the children’s the possibility of getting a good grade in school. This hypothesis has been supported because: A lot of the students prefer having computer and internet access because it helps them research their work. When the children starts working they will earn less money. People cannot afford the cost of the desktop computer with monitor – this is likely to affect poorer families. Teachers don’t get the potential that they see in the students.
16. Strategy Research on how the students are getting on with their studies. Send the results of the questionnaire to a higher authority. Educational campaign to highlight lack of: Computers Internet Access
Editor's Notes
The target population (the children who goes to Stuart-Bathurst Catholic High School) was 800 students in May 2011.I chose this type of population because this is the school that is mostly affected by students who doesn’t have access with computers and internet.
