2. FIRST Lego League:
• Challenges students to
solve real world
problems using robotics.
• Encourages students to
work together and to
think like scientists and
engineers.
• Builds self esteem and
confidence.
• Provides a fun, creative,
hands on learning
experience.
3. FLL Children:
• Apply math and science
concepts to design, build
and program autonomous
robots.
• Research challenges
facing scientists today.
• Learn teamwork skills.
• Present their findings to
their community.
• Discover the fun in
science, technology,
engineering, and math
(STEM).
4. How FLL works:
• Teams of up to 10 children,
grades 4-6 are formed in each
of our schools.
• FLL releases its “challenge” for
the year. Past challenges
include: Nature’s Fury, Food
Factor, Body Forward, and
Senior Solutions.
• Students begin work building
their robot and challenge mat,
researching this year’s topics
and getting to know their team
mates.
• By the end of the season,
students will have built and
programmed a robot using Lego
Mindstorms technology,
researched a problem facing
today’s scientists and
discovered an innovative
solution for that problem.
5. FLL In Orange:
• At least 1 team at each
school.
• Collaborate with 21st
Century on STEM learning.
• Run a month long summer
camp (this year’s camp will
focus on building a Green
City as well as a Mission to
Mars).
• We have gone to the state
competition almost every
year that we have run the
program.
6. Our Goals:
• To partner with local
engineers who are
interested in becoming
mentors to our FLL
children.
• To raise money in order to
purchase a Nao Robot.
• We would like to see the
program grow during both
the regular season and
summer camp and
perhaps add a spring
session as well.
7. “I like that the whole experience taught them to
analyze a problem and come up with a solution in
a team environment. This is the real world and it
really empowered them. It gave them a taste of
what life is really like and showed them what they
could accomplish if they just imagined, trusted
their ideas and tried. Ryan was very timid when
speaking in groups and the Lego League really
brought him to life and helped him conquer his
fears. He loved what he was doing so much he
never thought twice about the competition or
public speaking.”
-Kristi P., FIRST Lego League parent.
“I liked that we could add all of our special touches
to what we were building. I am glad I get to work
with other people as a team. I liked that we got to
work as a team and got to take turns operating
the robot and express ourselves the way we
wanted. ”
-Ryan C, 4th grade FIRST Lego League student
8. “During Lego League, I have learned
that it is easier to work as a team than
to try and do something alone.”
-Aiden K, 6th grade FIRST Lego League
student
“I liked learning different ways our
community helps one another and how
my ideas can also help my community.”
Sri Lehka K, 4th grade FIRST Lego
League student
“My favorite part of Lego League was
programming the robots. It took a lot
of work to make them run correctly.”
-Cooper B, 6th grade FIRST Lego League
student
