Hello, my name is Hugo Gonzalez, I study at the polytechnic University of Catalonia, in Barcelona. Specifically in: Multimedia Applications Laboratory. In this proposal to take part : Hugo Gonzalez, Luis Torres, Joseph Mª Monguet. We work in the laboratory of multimedia; and Jordi Ojeda works in the Institute of industrial system control. This presentation is about a design proposal: Design of what? Well, the design of a semantic agent Design of what? monitoring and visualization (?) And,,, from whom or where? User in a community of practice and/or research
Nowadays we are witnessing how semantic web services with social construction, collaborative approach, versatile and effective exchange of information through metadata standards and ontologies are becoming more popular and people are increasing the connection to social networks and online communities. We all know. Everyday social networks like twitter, facebook... attract more followers and everyday there are more web tools to make easier the user’s social connectivity and collaboration. This presentation describes a proposal to design an agent with new technologies of semantic web in order to facilitate monitoring and displaying of interactions between community users.
This design is divided into two modules: The first one : Monitoring Module. This module works with semantic technology, analysing user interactions and content of interactions; and the second one is the visualization module, This will draw a graphical map of the interactions of users.
The semantic web project, basically is that computers understand users. For this purpose, the W3C has defined methodologies and technology standards. For example, taxonomies, ontologies, OWL, RDF, Web Accessibility, and other more. With these new technologies open the way for social networks. The user becomes social, collaborates and participates on the web; The user takes the role of participating on the web. We think it's good to mix social networking with e-learning and analysing these platforms. The objective of this proposal is to merge the advantages of the semantic web and its tools focused on social, collaborative environments, communities of practices, collaborative and practices communities, this way the monitoring, information exchange and interactions of the users will be facilitated and the result will be a graphic map of the above mentioned interactions.
The question is: How to organize and to share knowledge in a community of practice? The proposal emerges from different ideas and different theories. intercreativity (Berners-Lee), Collective intelligence (Lévy), architecture of participation (O'Reilly), Connectivism (Siemens & Stephen Downes) and from different points of view as anthropology, knowledge management, design thinking, distributed cognition, action research, tic's resulting in a multidisciplinary approach.
This design is divided in three sub activities. The monitoring activity. Responsible for monitoring user interactions and community. The activity of the viewing environment. Responsible for drawing a graphical map of the interactions of user. And the activity of the user profile. Based on user activities and degree of interaction will define a Socio-Technographics profile
For the semantic agent, we designed a tool called “catch content” This tool is a plugin, To add to the browser. The activity to capture the URI address and request the user a brief description of the content capture. The information captured is stored in a metadata model. These models are used to describe objects of learning support, for example (Dublin Core or LOM) This information is captured and stored, and it will be distributed by the semantic agent with other users on the same profile.
The experiment will carry out in a community of learning and research The pictures show the process of the tool “catch”. The user is surfing on internet and if it finds any important site At that moment the user runs the catch tool. It runs a pop-up, which asks for a small description, basically are tags and categories. The tool captures the tags, categories and the URI. at the end, the user submits this information to the database. The agent receives this information and gives out with other users of the common profile for example , if an user captures information about the topic “anthropology”, the distribution of the capture will be sent to users with the same profile.
This is the flowchart.
And this would be the repository of the user’ s content. This space will show user activity, content captured by him and the content shared by other users. This place will show user’s activities , captured contents and the contents shared by other users. Also it includes a small graphic user activity.
As a result of user ’s interactions, we will implement a visualization module. The work of this module is to make two maps about community’ s activities. A map that will focus on users and another will focus on the tags.
Here we can see examples of design of maps, one about users and other about tags.
For the development of the tools, based on the features and properties of the new technological model 2.0, an analysis and design of software will be carried out, based on methodologies as: unified process of software development and extreme programming, proposing an alpha experimentation, a beta experimentation and, finally, their implementation in specified environments. For the development of ontologies the software Protege will be used; the Java tools will be utilized for the development of the tools of application to the web browser, and for the development of the site an evaluation of the different open platforms will be carried out doing a selection of the most adequate based on the flexibility and adaptation to the web environments 2.0
As expected results we will obtain different web 2.0 tools, A model for monitoring users in a community of practice and a model socio-techno-graphic.
It's a model defined by the degree of user participation. An user can be defined as some collector, but very critical; Another user can be defined as little spectator, but very creative Another user can be defined as little creative, but very collector
The experiment will carry out in different communities of learning and/or research We are in agreement with four sites to make “tests”
