14. The
mission
of
the
New
Economy
Coali9on
(NEC)
is
to
convene
and
support
all
those
who
might
contribute
to
an
economy
that
is
restora9ve
to
people,
place,
and
planet,
and
that
operates
according
to
principles
of
democracy,
jus9ce
and
appropriate
scale.
Faced
with
interconnected
ecological
and
economic
crises,
we
believe
that
shared
prosperity,
sustainability
and
an
equitable
society
require
deep,
systemic
changes
to
both
our
economy
and
our
poli9cs.
We
support
a
just
transi9on
to
a
new
economy
that
enables
both
thriving
communi9es
and
ecological
health.
Today,
the
majority
of
people
are
deprived
of
a
voice
in
poli9cal
and
economic
life.
Fundamental
flaws
in
the
poli9cal
economic
system
permit
the
concentra9on
of
resources
and
power,
exacerba9ng
inequality
and
destroying
ecosystems.
The
beneficiaries
of
this
system
obstruct
efforts
to
restore
communi9es
and
livelihoods.
These
crises
are
poisoning
our
water,
air,
and
land;
crea9ng
climate
chaos;
and
driving
millions
into
disease
and
poverty.

15. The
main
aim
of
the
project
generally,
and
echoed
by
the
towns
locally,
is
to
raise
awareness
of
sustainable
living
and
build
local
ecological
resilience
in
the
near
future.
Communi9es
are
encouraged
to
seek
out
methods
for
reducing
energy
usage
as
well
as
reducing
their
reliance
on
long
supply
chains
that
are
totally
dependent
on
fossil
fuels
for
essen9al
items.
Food
is
a
key
area,
and
they
o}en
talk
of
"Food
feet,
not
food
miles!"
Ini9a9ves
so
far
have
included
crea9ng
community
gardens
to
grow
food;
business
waste
exchange,
which
seeks
to
match
the
waste
of
one
industry
with
another
industry
that
uses
that
waste
material;
and
even
simply
repairing
old
items
rather
than
throwing
them
away.
The

of

that

While
the
focus
and
aims
remain
the
same,
the
methods
used
to
achieve
these
vary.
For
example,
Totnes
has
introduced
its
own
local
currency,
the
Totnes

which
is
redeemable
in
local
