Facet Disease in the Back ,[object Object],How the Condition is Caused, Diagnosed & Treated,[object Object]
Facet Disease in the Back ,[object Object],Facet disease in the back primarily affects individuals who have reached or exceeded middle age. This spinal condition is a type of arthritis, and occurs when the cartilaginous lining of the facet joints begins to deteriorate. If you are experiencing pain, inflammation, soreness, and stiffness in your lower back, you could possibly be suffering from facet disease. Before consulting a physician to receive a diagnosis, you may benefit from learning more about the condition, including its causes and treatments. ,[object Object]
Causes of Facet Disease,[object Object],	Certain anatomical components of the spine – intervertebral discs, vertebrae, and facet joints, especially – are placed under constant strain because of their weight bearing responsibilities and contributions to bending, twisting, and other movements. Over time, these spinal components start to undergo degenerative changes, as is the case with facet disease. The cartilaginous lining begins to wear away, leading to bone-on-bone contact, and the subsequent growth of bone spurs (or osteophytes). If these smooth nodules of excess bone extend into the spinal column, the spinal cord and nerve roots are at risk for compression, which a can lead to numbness, tingling, and/or muscle weakness in the lower back, hips, buttocks, or even the legs.,[object Object], ,[object Object],	While facet disease in the back tends to occur as a result of the natural aging process, there are certain risk factors that can contribute to the deterioration of the spinal joints. The intervertebral discs of those who participate in high-impact sports such as gymnastics and football, for instance, may break down at a younger age because of the continuous strain that is placed on them. Likewise, those who work in physically demanding jobs that require a great deal of lifting, bending, or twisting, can experience premature deterioration of the facet joints. ,[object Object], ,[object Object],	Obesity, however, is perhaps one of the most detrimental risk factors for facet disease in the back. Because the lumbar spine (lower back) is responsible for supporting the weight of the upper body, being overweight can drastically affect the health of this region of the spine. The intervertebral discs are responsible for absorbing greater amounts of impact, the foraminal openings in the vertebrae through which the nerve roots pass are prone to becoming clogged, and the facet joints can experience premature deterioration. Unfortunately, a sedentary lifestyle tends to accompany the poor eating habits that lead to obesity, which only exacerbates the many conditions that affect the spine. ,[object Object]
Diagnosing Facet Disease in the Back,[object Object],	Facet disease can sometimes prove difficult to diagnose, as a number of spinal conditions share similar symptoms. Nonetheless, your physician should be able to determine the cause of your chronic back pain by using the following techniques:,[object Object], ,[object Object],Asking a series of questions. Having a thorough understanding of your symptoms, where they are experienced, and the level of their severity can help your physician better determine what is causing your discomfort. He or she may also ask if your family has a history of spinal conditions, as genetics may play a role in the development of facet disease.,[object Object],Performing a physical exam. Palpating the spine will allow your doctor to determine if there are any noticeable anatomical abnormalities in or along your spine. He or she may also test your reflexes and muscle strength to determine if any of your spinal nerves are being compressed.,[object Object],Ordering diagnostic testing. Oftentimes, an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI is the only way to definitively diagnose a spinal condition. These tests can show whether a facet joint is arthritic and whether a bone spur has developed, and can also reveal if a different spinal condition is to blame for your symptoms.,[object Object]
Noninvasive Treatments for Facet Disease,[object Object],	If your physician has diagnosed you with facet disease in the back, he or she will likely recommend a regimen of noninvasive treatments. Because there is no cure for facet disease or any other type of arthritis, treatment will focus on alleviating your symptoms rather than on regenerating the cartilage in the affected joint. ,[object Object], ,[object Object],	One of the most effective treatments for facet disease is the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as naproxen, aspirin, and ibuprofen. By blocking the body’s production of the COX-1 and/or COX-2 enzymes, NSAIDs help to reduce inflammation and relieve pain. If you are unable to consume NSAIDs (because of a condition that affects the heart, gastrointestinal tract, or other part of the body), your doctor may prescribe pain relievers or muscle relaxants. For those who prefer to take a more naturalistic approach to their healthcare, there are a number of herbal supplements that are said to reduce inflammation, lubricate joints, and relieve pain. If you are interested in pursuing this form of alternative therapy, consult an herbal nutritionist for assistance with selecting the supplements that will provide you with optimal benefits.,[object Object], ,[object Object],	Physical therapy is also proven to relieve the symptoms of facet disease, as strengthening the muscles in the back can help to relieve neural compression. A physical therapist may incorporate other techniques into your treatment, such as hot/cold therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), and posture modification exercises, among others. Alternative therapies are also available for those who would rather not work with a physical therapist. Restorative yoga and Pilates, in particular, are popular options for those who suffer from chronic back pain. These types of exercise focus on strengthening the core muscles in the back and abdomen, providing many of the same benefits as physical therapy. Before you sign up for a yoga or Pilates class, be sure to let your instructor know that you suffer from facet disease in the back; he or she can modify certain poses and exercises to better meet your needs.,[object Object]
Surgical Treatment,[object Object],	Approximately 90 percent of those who are diagnosed with facet disease in the back are able to find meaningful relief from noninvasive treatments. If you are among the remaining 10 percent who don’t, your physician may recommend that you undergo a surgical procedure. Thanks to new advances in medical technology, you may not have to endure traditional open spine surgery and the lengthy and arduous rehabilitation it requires. Some patients qualify for a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure that utilizes a laser to deaden the nerve ending that travels through the affected facet joint. This procedure is very similar to an oral root canal and it allows many patients to experience instant relief.,[object Object], ,[object Object],	Be sure to ask your doctor or spine specialist if you are a candidate for an endoscopic procedure. He or she can fully explain all of the risks and benefits that are associated with open spine surgery and a minimally invasive procedure. Before consenting to any procedure, make sure that you are 100 percent comfortable with all of the possible hazards, such as infection, blood clot, and failed back surgery syndrome (the worsening or continuation of symptoms following surgery). You may want to pursue a second or third opinion to ensure all noninvasive treatments have been utilized and that the proper diagnosis was formed in the first place.,[object Object]
