Discussions:

There have been many different events that have had an impact on the field of
organizational psychology, including the growth of scientific management and the
Hawthorne Studies. What are some current social issues or events that you feel will
impact the field of organizational psychology?

Organizational psychology is an applied branch of psychology, which is concerned
with understanding people in organizations. Keeping this in mind, I would like for
each of you to identify a problem that you have experienced at work, and then
discuss the relevance of organizational psychology to your problem. Please post
your response to this thread.

Based on your readings for Week Two, how would you respond to the following
scenario?

Bill is a new factory manager for ABC Inc. After being on the job for just two weeks,
Bill is approached by one of his employees, Sandy. She would like Bill to evaluate
her job performance. While Bill is trying to decide what to tell Sandy, Bill’s boss calls
him and asks him to provide a list of employees that should get merit raises. After
being in his position for only two weeks, how can Bill decide which employees are
doing a good job?

As discussed in your readings, organizational commitment is the attachment that a
person has for his or her job. How committed are you to your organization? Why?

Now that we have discussed the concept of internal and external sources of
motivation, I would like to pose the following question: Do internal and external
sources need to be complementary in order for motivation to occur?

As a part of our discussion of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, I would like for you to
keep a diary of your various behaviors over the course of the next couple of days.
Then categorize them according to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Do your behaviors
conform to Maslow’s predicted hierarchy?

Groups, both formal and informal, play an important role in the workplace, so it is
important to understand the different aspects of group dynamics. I would like for
each one of you to create a very brief vignette that illustrates one of the following
concepts related to group dynamics: social loafing, group polarization, conformity,
and group think. Once you have completed writing your vignette, please post it to
this thread. After you have posted your vignette I would like for you to read through
your classmates’ responses and try to guess which concept is being played out in
their vignettes.

I would like for everyone to use the Internet, University Library, or other resources
to locate a current article that concerns the impact of groups on individuals. Read
the article and post a short summary of its main points as a response to this
message by Friday. Do not forget to include reference information for your article so
your classmates can find it if they are interested in reading the material. Also, read
and comment on several of the summaries posted by your classmates

As the class winds down, I want everyone to have an opportunity to get clarification
about any topics covered in this course that you may still have questions about.
Therefore, I want each of you to create your own DQ about any topic covered in the
course. Post your DQ to this thread. Then, read and respond to at least two of your
classmates' DQs. Follow up posts from your fellow team members should be
focused on helping one another answer any remaining questions.
