- Let us today consider the cross. I want you to look at this cross for a moment and think what it says to you. There is so much meaning in the cross but perhaps today we must remind ourselves of how terrible the cross is, let us not just see some sanitized picture of the cross but see it as a horribly violent instrument of accusation and judgement.Two things we must see in the cross. Firstly: The cross was the final judgement on what was considered to be evil in the time of Jesus. Every society needs final punishment, needs to decide what they do with those that they need to remove from society, those they cannot rehabilitate. This is the cross it represents the final judgement of the day, when someone was accused of great evil and found guilty in Jerusalem they were taken outside of the city to Golgotha, the place were big problems were discarded. It was like a human rubbish dump, an extreme place of judgment.Secondly: The cross, this terrible tool of torture and rejection became a place of love and acceptance. Someone recently asked me how a God of love can do this to their son? . Nice one to have to answer on a little facebook chat box. My answer was something like this: Firstly we must remember that Jesus is God and that this wasn’t done to Him in as much as that He chose this, secondly this shows us God’s love for us in that He considered an eternity without us worse than dying such a horrible death on the cross. In a sense it’s like a mother that will go through the discomfort of pregnancy and the pain of giving birth for the promise of relationship. The cross is God stepping in the way of the bullet that was headed toward us.
