1. EDUCATION FOR ALL: A FAIRER FUTURE ATLASSIAN USER GROUP LONDON 19TH APRIL 2011 THE STEVE SINNOTT FOUNDATION WORLDWIDE ONLINE COMMUNITY A confluence CASE STUDY
2. Who are we ? Steve Sinnott was the highly respected head of the National Union of Teachers in England and Wales Hisuntimely death in 2008 came as a shock to colleagues, friends and the education community in the UK and the world over. The Foundation was established in 2009 to honour his passion and commitment to education and continue the momentum of his work by supporting and promoting the UN Millennium Development Goals for education. The Foundation was officially launched in London in May 2009 and in Washington DC in 2009. It had its Parliamentary launch in December 2009. Steve Sinnott General Secretary, NUT 24 June 1951 – 5 April 2008
3. What is our Mission ? To secure good quality education for children from the poorest and most disadvantaged communities across the world and campaign for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals for Education
4. The Education MDGs Goal 2 : Achieve Universal Primary Education Target : Ensure that all children (boys and girls) have access to a full course of primary schooling by 2015 Goal 3 : Promote gender equality and empower women Target : Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005 and at all levels by 2015
5. The six EFA Goals Expand early childhood care & education. Provide free and compulsory primary education for all. Promote learning and life skills for young people and adults. Increase adult literacy by 50%. Achieve gender parity by 2005, gender equality by 2015. Improve the quality of education.
6. MDG Facts & Figures A single year of primary schooling increases the wages people can earn in later life by 5-15% for boys and even more for girls. In Sub Saharan Africa 1 in 4 children of primary school age were out of school in 2008. Its not just about enrolment but retention as well. More than 30% children drop out before reaching the final grade of primary school. Some of the reasons why 72 million children are still out of school – poverty, discrimination, conflict & natural disasters and lack of investment in education. 35% of the total children out of school in low-income countries are affected by conflict. The global economic crisis has created further impediments for investment in public services – including education in developing countries. Source – MDG Reports 2009, 2010, GCE website
