12 Cellular respiration is divided into two basic stages: Stage 1 occurs in the cytoplasm, glucose is broken down into smaller molecules, releasing a small amount of energy. And stage 2 occurs in the mitochondria, the smaller molecules react, producing carbon dioxide, water, and a large amount of energy.
